Classroom Kannada Between a Teacher and a Student

⭐⭐ Intermediate⏱ ⏱️ 12 minutes📊 Lesson 35 of 126

Classroom Kannada is the most formal register you will regularly meet, and it runs strictly one way — the teacher uses ನೀನು downward, the student uses ನೀವು upward, regardless of either person’s age. An adult learner in a Kannada class is still expected to address a younger teacher respectfully. This page shows a real lesson exchange and the phrases that make asking for help easy.

In the Classroom

A student arrives late and then asks about something in the lesson.

ಸರ್, ಒಳಗೆ ಬರಬಹುದಾ?
sar, olage barabahudaa?
Sir, may I come in?
ಬಾ, ಯಾಕೆ ತಡ ಆಯ್ತು?
baa, yaake tada aaytu?
Come, why are you late?
ಬಸ್ ತಡ ಆಯ್ತು ಸರ್
bas tada aaytu sar
The bus was late, sir
ಸರಿ, ಕುಳಿತುಕೋ
sari, kulituko
Alright, sit down
ಸರ್, ಒಂದು ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ
sar, ondu prashne
Sir, one question
ಕೇಳು
kelu
Ask
ಇದು ಅರ್ಥ ಆಗಲಿಲ್ಲ
idu artha aagalilla
I didn’t understand this
ಇನ್ನೊಮ್ಮೆ ವಿವರಿಸ್ತೀನಿ
innomme vivaristeeni
I’ll explain once more
ಧನ್ಯವಾದ ಸರ್
dhanyavaada sar
Thank you, sir

Notice the asymmetry. The teacher says ಬಾ, ಕುಳಿತುಕೋ and ಕೇಳು — bare imperatives. The student says ಬರಬಹುದಾ? — a question, not a statement. This gap is the whole grammar of the classroom.

Phrases for Not Understanding

These are the highest-value sentences on the page. Learners who own them progress much faster than learners who nod politely.

ಅರ್ಥ ಆಗಲಿಲ್ಲ
artha aagalilla
I didn’t understand
ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ನಿಧಾನವಾಗಿ ಹೇಳಿ
swalpa nidhaanavaagi heli
Please say it slowly
ಮತ್ತೊಮ್ಮೆ ಹೇಳಿ
mattomme heli
Please say it again
ಇದರ ಅರ್ಥ ಏನು?
idara artha enu?
What does this mean?
ಹೇಗೆ ಬರೆಯೋದು?
hege bareyodu?
How do I write it?
ಒಂದು ಉದಾಹರಣೆ ಕೊಡಿ
ondu udaaharane kodi
Please give an example
ಇದು ಸರಿಯಾಗಿದೆಯಾ?
idu sariyaagideyaa?
Is this correct?

ಒಂದು ಉದಾಹರಣೆ ಕೊಡಿ is worth more than any other request. An abstract explanation in a second language often fails; an example almost always lands. Ask for one whenever a rule confuses you.

What the Teacher Says
ಗಮನ ಕೊಡಿ
gamana kodi
Pay attention
ಪುಸ್ತಕ ತೆಗೆಯಿರಿ
pustaka tegeyiri
Open your books
ಬರೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳಿ
baredukolli
Write it down
ಯಾರಿಗಾದರೂ ಸಂದೇಹ ಇದೆಯಾ?
yaarigaadaroo sandeha ideyaa?
Does anyone have a doubt?
ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದೀಯ
chennaagi maadiddeeya
You’ve done well
ಇನ್ನೂ ಅಭ್ಯಾಸ ಮಾಡು
innoo abhyaasa maadu
Practise more
ಮನೆಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡು ಬಾ
manekelasa maadikondu baa
Do your homework and come

ಸಂದೇಹ is the word Indian classrooms use for a question or a point of confusion — ‘doubt’ in Indian English. If a teacher asks ಸಂದೇಹ ಇದೆಯಾ?, they are inviting questions, not questioning your faith.

Pronunciation Tips
  1. ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ has the cluster ಪ್ರ then ಶ್ನೆ. Say ‘prash-ne’ in two beats.
  2. ಅರ್ಥ has ರ್ಥ — an r followed by an aspirated dental. ‘Ar-tha’.
  3. ವಿವರಿಸ್ತೀನಿ is long but even. No syllable takes stress.
  4. ಉದಾಹರಣೆ has a retroflex ಣ near the end. Five light syllables.
  5. ಕುಳಿತುಕೋ uses retroflex ಳ and contracts in speech to ‘kulko’.
Common Mistakes
  • Using ನೀನು with a teacher. Always ನೀವು, even if the teacher is younger than you.
  • Nodding instead of saying ಅರ್ಥ ಆಗಲಿಲ್ಲ. Pretending to follow is the fastest way to stall your progress.
  • Calling a teacher by name. Use ಸರ್, ಮೇಡಂ or ಮೇಷ್ಟ್ರು.
  • Answering a bare imperative with one of your own. The teacher says ಕೇಳು; you do not say ಹೇಳು back. Use ಹೇಳಿ.
  • Misreading ‘doubt’. In Indian classroom English, a doubt is simply a question.
Cultural Note — Teachers in Karnataka

Teacher-student formality in Karnataka is real and persistent. Students stand when a teacher enters a room, and adults who meet a former schoolteacher decades later will still touch their feet. Teachers’ Day on 5 September is genuinely observed in schools across the state, with students taking over classes for the day.

The Sanskrit line ಗುರುರ್ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಾ, placing the teacher alongside the divine, is recited in many schools, and the word ಗುರು carries that weight even when used casually. Karnataka’s own tradition adds to this — the Sharada Peetha at Sringeri and the Udupi mathas have made teaching lineages central to the state’s cultural memory.

For adult learners, this matters practically. A Kannada tutor, even a young one, expects and deserves the formal register. Starting a lesson with ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ ಸರ್ or ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ ಮೇಡಂ sets the right tone and is noticed.

Practice
  1. Memorise ಅರ್ಥ ಆಗಲಿಲ್ಲ and ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ನಿಧಾನವಾಗಿ ಹೇಳಿ.
  2. Ask for permission to enter and to leave in the polite form.
  3. Request an example with ಒಂದು ಉದಾಹರಣೆ ಕೊಡಿ during your next lesson.
  4. Rewrite the teacher’s seven commands in the polite -ಇ form.
  5. Check your own work by asking ಇದು ಸರಿಯಾಗಿದೆಯಾ?
