Doctors in Karnataka cities usually speak English. The people around them often do not — the nurse taking your vitals, the pharmacy counter, the lab technician, the receptionist at a rural PHC. This conversation covers the whole visit, and pays particular attention to prescription instructions, which are where misunderstandings actually cause harm.
The Consultation
ಎಷ್ಟು ದಿನದಿಂದ? is the question you will always be asked, and the answer format is fixed: number + ದಿನದಿಂದ. Two days is ಎರಡು ದಿನದಿಂದ, a week is ಒಂದು ವಾರದಿಂದ.
Note the useful negative construction ತಿನ್ನಕ್ಕೆ ಆಗ್ತಿಲ್ಲ — ‘I am not able to eat’. Swap the verb and it covers most functional complaints: ನಡೆಯಕ್ಕೆ ಆಗ್ತಿಲ್ಲ (can’t walk), ಮಲಗಕ್ಕೆ ಆಗ್ತಿಲ್ಲ (can’t sleep).
Describing Symptoms Precisely
ರಾತ್ರಿ ಜಾಸ್ತಿ and ಆಗಾಗ ಬರುತ್ತೆ are the two qualifiers doctors most want to hear. Pattern matters more than intensity in most diagnoses, and being able to say when something worsens is genuinely useful clinical information.
Careful: ಊತ with a long oo means swelling, while ಊಟ means a meal. Different final consonant, very different sentence.
Understanding the Prescription
This is the section that matters most. Getting dosage instructions wrong is the real risk of a language gap.
ಊಟದ ನಂತರ versus ಊಟಕ್ಕೆ ಮೊದಲು is the single most important distinction here. If you catch nothing else, catch this one, and repeat it back to confirm.
Always repeat instructions back: ದಿನಕ್ಕೆ ಎರಡು ಬಾರಿ, ಊಟದ ನಂತರ, ಸರಿನಾ?. Pharmacists and doctors in Karnataka are used to this and will correct you happily.
Pronunciation Tips
- ಜ್ವರ opens with the cluster ಜ್ವ. Say ‘jva-ra’ as one flowing start.
- ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆ has the ಕ್ಷ cluster — ‘pa-reek-she’.
- ಊತ (swelling) versus ಊಟ (meal): dental t against retroflex t.
- ವಿಶ್ರಾಂತಿ has ಶ್ರ then a nasal. Break as vish-raan-ti.
- Speak slowly in a clinic. Clarity beats fluency when the stakes are medical.
Common Mistakes
- Not clarifying before or after food. ಊಟದ ನಂತರ and ಊಟಕ್ಕೆ ಮೊದಲು must be understood exactly.
- Stopping medication when you feel better. ಪೂರ್ತಿ ಮುಗಿಸಿ means finish the course, and it matters for antibiotics.
- Confusing ಊತ and ಊಟ. Swelling versus meal.
- Accepting a pharmacy suggestion instead of a diagnosis. Counter staff often propose medicines. Say ವೈದ್ಯರನ್ನು ನೋಡಬೇಕು if you want a doctor.
- Not carrying written allergy information. A card in Kannada outperforms spoken vocabulary under stress.
Cultural Note — Healthcare in Karnataka
Karnataka has a mixed system that visitors find confusing. ಸರ್ಕಾರಿ ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆ (government hospitals) are cheap or free but crowded; ಖಾಸಗಿ (private) hospitals are fast and expensive. Between them sit thousands of small clinics where a single doctor sees patients from morning to night without appointments.
Ayurveda and homeopathy are mainstream rather than alternative here, and many families use them alongside allopathic medicine. A Kannada speaker may tell you they are taking ಆಯುರ್ವೇದ medicine at the same time as a prescription, and mentioning this to your doctor is worth doing.
The 108 ambulance service is free statewide and reliable in most districts. Government hospitals in rural Karnataka are the primary care point for most of the population, and they operate almost entirely in Kannada — which is precisely why this vocabulary is worth having before you need it.
Practice
- Describe a past illness in Kannada using ಎಷ್ಟು ದಿನದಿಂದ.
- Practise the negative pattern: ತಿನ್ನಕ್ಕೆ ಆಗ್ತಿಲ್ಲ, ಮಲಗಕ್ಕೆ ಆಗ್ತಿಲ್ಲ.
- Repeat a dosage instruction back correctly with ಸರಿನಾ?
- Write your allergies and conditions on a card in Kannada.
- Learn ಊಟದ ನಂತರ and ಊಟಕ್ಕೆ ಮೊದಲು until they are instant.
