This is the most immediately useful page in the beginner set. An auto driver who hears Kannada quotes a different price than one who hears English — that is simply true in Bengaluru. Vehicles
Bengaluru’s metro is officially ನಮ್ಮ ಮೆಟ್ರೊ — ‘our metro’. ನಮ್ಮ (namma) means ‘our’ and appears everywhere in Karnataka branding: Namma Bengaluru, Namma Karnataka. It is a small word doing a lot of civic work.
Announcements on the metro and BMTC buses are in Kannada first, then English. Listening to them is genuinely good practice — the sentences are short, clear and repeated.
Auto Rickshaw Phrases That Work
ಮೀಟರ್ ಹಾಕಿ is the whole game. Said in Kannada, calmly, it works far more often than an argument in English. If the driver refuses, walk to the next one — there is always a next one.
ಚಿಲ್ಲರೆ (change) is a daily negotiation in Karnataka. Carrying small notes saves you the standard ‘no change’ standoff at the end of every ride.
Buses, Trains and Directions
On a BMTC bus, the conductor will ask ಎಲ್ಲಿಗೆ? — just the destination is enough as an answer. Say the place name clearly and hand over the money; he will tell you the fare. Bus destination boards are in Kannada on the front and English on the side, which is another good reason to read the script.
Pronunciation Tips
- ಎಷ್ಟು uses the retroflex ಷ followed by ಟ. Say ‘esh-tu’ with the tongue curled.
- ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸಿ has a doubled l. ‘Nil-li-si’, three beats.
- ಹೋಗ್ತೀರಾ compresses in speech to something like ‘hog-tee-raa’.
- Place names keep their Kannada pronunciation. Say ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು (Bengalooru), not ‘Bangalore’, and drivers understand faster.
- ಎಡ (left) and ಬಲ (right) are short. Do not stretch the vowels.
Common Mistakes
- Saying the destination in an English accent. Jayanagara, Malleshwara, Basavanagudi — say them the Kannada way and the driver hears them instantly.
- Asking ಎಷ್ಟು before saying ಮೀಟರ್ ಹಾಕಿ. Once you ask the price, you have invited a negotiation instead of a meter.
- Confusing ಇಲ್ಲಿ and ಅಲ್ಲಿ. Here versus there. One vowel, and you end up at the wrong corner.
- Using ನೀನು with a driver. Use ನೀವು. It costs nothing and changes the tone of the whole ride.
- Expecting exact change. Carry ten and twenty rupee notes; the ‘no change’ problem is universal.
Cultural Note — Getting Around Karnataka
Bengaluru’s autos have a reputation, but the dynamic is simple: drivers deal with traffic that eats their earning hours, and they price accordingly. Speaking Kannada signals you are not a short-term visitor, and the quoted price usually drops. Apps have changed things, but the street auto is still faster in old Bengaluru’s lanes.
Outside Bengaluru, KSRTC buses are the backbone. Red buses are ordinary service, and the Airavat and Rajahamsa classes are the air-conditioned and semi-deluxe tiers. Long-distance overnight buses to Mangaluru, Hubballi and Belagavi are booked online, and the boarding point instruction will often be given to you in Kannada over the phone.
One practical note: Karnataka place names have been officially Kannadised — Bangalore is Bengaluru, Mysore is Mysuru, Belgaum is Belagavi, Hubli is Hubballi, Mangalore is Mangaluru, Gulbarga is Kalaburagi, Bellary is Ballari. Using the current names in conversation is both correct and appreciated.
