Nobody in a Bengaluru office speaks pure Kannada, and pretending otherwise will make this vocabulary useless to you. What actually happens is code-mixing: an English technical spine with Kannada connectors and endings. ‘Meeting ge hogtaidini’ is a complete, natural sentence. This page teaches the Kannada words that survive in the workplace, and shows exactly how they combine with English.
Work and Workplace
ಕೆಲಸ is the workhorse. It means work, job, task and chore all at once. ಕೆಲಸ ಇದೆ (I have work) is the universal polite excuse, and ಕೆಲಸ ಆಯ್ತಾ? (is the work done?) is what a manager actually asks.
ಕಚೇರಿ properly means a government office, and it carries that flavour. For a tech office people simply say ‘office’.
How Bengaluru Actually Talks at Work
These are real code-mixed sentences. The English words stay English; Kannada supplies the grammar.
Notice the pattern: an English noun plus ಮಾಡು (to do) creates an instant verb. call maadu, mail maadu, book maadu, update maadu. This one construction unlocks more workplace Kannada than any vocabulary list. Learn ಮಾಡಿ and you can improvise.
Asking and Answering Politely
ಸರಿ and ಆಯ್ತು are the two most-heard words in any Karnataka workplace. ಸರಿ covers okay, right, correct and agreed. ಆಯ್ತು covers done, finished and understood. You can survive a full day on these two.
Pronunciation Tips
- ಕೆಲಸ is three light syllables, no stress. Not ‘ke-LA-sa’.
- ರಜೆ has a soft j. ‘Ra-je’ with a light final e.
- In code-mixed speech, keep English words in English pronunciation. ‘Meeting’ should sound like meeting.
- The suffix -ಗೆ (to/for) attaches directly and is unstressed: ‘meeting-ge’, one flow.
- ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ has a doubled t and a doubled l — both held briefly.
Common Mistakes
- Trying to speak pure Kannada at work. It sounds stiff and slows everyone down. Code-mixing is the actual register.
- Using ನೀನು with a colleague you just met. Default to ನೀವು until the team’s own norm becomes clear.
- Saying ಕಚೇರಿ for a tech office. It sounds like a government department. Just say office.
- Over-apologising. Kannada workplaces use ಕ್ಷಮಿಸಿ far less than English uses sorry. Repeated apology reads as anxiety.
- Assuming everyone speaks Kannada. Bengaluru offices are genuinely multilingual. Open in Kannada, but switch gracefully if the other person does not.
Cultural Note — Language at Work in Karnataka
Bengaluru’s workforce comes from everywhere, so English is the working language in most private firms. But Kannada matters at the edges of the office — with security staff, housekeeping, drivers, canteen workers and vendors. Those are the people who make your day function, and a ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ changes the relationship immediately.
Government offices are different. Karnataka mandates Kannada for official state government work, and forms, notices and file movements happen in Kannada. If you deal with the RTO, a sub-registrar office or a BBMP ward office, some Kannada is genuinely necessary or you will be dependent on an agent.
There is also a real cultural expectation that people who live in Karnataka long-term will make some effort with the language. This is not hostility — it is the same expectation any place has. Ten words of Kannada, used sincerely, buys a surprising amount of goodwill.
