Kannada Nature Vocabulary, Weather and Landscape

⭐ Beginner⏱ ⏱️ 11 minutes📊 Lesson 16 of 126

Karnataka packs an unusual range of landscape into one state — the dry Deccan plateau in the north, rainforest in the Western Ghats, a coastline on the Arabian Sea, and a plateau city built around man-made lakes. The vocabulary reflects that. ಕೆರೆ (kere) is a word you will meet constantly in Bengaluru place names, and ಮಳೆ (male) carries more weight in Malnad than almost any other noun.

Rain gets its own grammar of intensity in Kannada. ಜಿಟಿಜಿಟಿ ಮಳೆ (jitijiti male) is a persistent drizzle, ಸೋನೆ ಮಳೆ (sone male) is the fine soaking rain of the Ghats, and ಧೋ ಎಂದು ಮಳೆ is a downpour. In Chikkamagaluru or Kodagu during June, these distinctions are practical information, not poetry.

ಮಳೆ ಬರ್ತಿದೆ (male bartide) is ‘it is raining’ — literally ‘rain is coming’. Kannada treats rain as something that arrives rather than something that happens.

ಕೆರೆ
kere
Lake / tank

ಕೆರೆ needs explaining. A kere is not a natural lake — it is a man-made tank, built over centuries to catch monsoon runoff. Bengaluru was designed around a chain of them, which is why the city is full of names ending in that word: Ulsoor, Bellandur, Sankey Tank, Hebbal Kere, Madivala Kere. Most are gone or polluted, and ಕೆರೆ ಉಳಿಸಿ (save the lake) is a live civic slogan.

The distinction between ಹೊಲ and ಗದ್ದೆ matters to anyone from rural Karnataka. A ಹೊಲ is a dry-land field growing ragi or jowar; a ಗದ್ದೆ is a bunded, flooded paddy field. Using the wrong one immediately marks you as a city person.

Summer

Karnataka runs on three seasons, not four, and the words are built transparently: ಮಳೆ + ಕಾಲ gives you monsoon-time, ಚಳಿ (cold) + ಕಾಲ gives you winter. ಬೇಸಿಗೆ is the odd one out and simply means the hot season.

Pronunciation Tips
  1. ಮಳೆ uses retroflex ಳ. ಮಲೆ with plain ಲ means a hill range — which is exactly where the word Malnad comes from.
  2. ಮಣ್ಣು and ಹುಲ್ಲು both have doubled consonants that must be held.
  3. ನಕ್ಷತ್ರ contains the cluster ಕ್ಷ, said as one ‘ksh’ beat, then ತ್ರ. Do not break it into four syllables.
  4. ಗುಡುಗು has three light, equal syllables. No English-style stress on the middle.
  5. ಕೆರೆ is two short beats, ‘ke-re’. Stretching it to ‘kay-ray’ is the most common learner error.
Common Mistakes
  • Confusing ಮಳೆ and ಮಲೆ. Rain versus hill country. One retroflex consonant separates them.
  • Calling every water body a ಕೆರೆ. A kere is a tank. A natural lake is still usually called kere colloquially, but a river is ನದಿ and a pond is ಕೊಳ.
  • Using ಹೊಲ for a paddy field. Rural speakers will correct you. Flooded rice land is ಗದ್ದೆ.
  • Saying ಮಳೆ ಆಗ್ತಿದೆ. Kannada says ಮಳೆ ಬರ್ತಿದೆ — rain comes, it does not happen.
  • Treating ಗಿಡ and ಮರ as interchangeable. A ಗಿಡ is a plant or sapling; a ಮರ is a full tree.
Cultural Note — Water, Ghats and the Kaveri

No natural feature matters more in Karnataka than the Kaveri. It rises at Talakaveri in Kodagu, and the annual Tula Sankramana there — when a spring surges at a fixed moment each October — draws thousands. The river also sits at the centre of a decades-long water-sharing dispute with Tamil Nadu, so ಕಾವೇರಿ is a word with political heat attached to it.

The Western Ghats, called ಮಲೆನಾಡು (Malnad, hill country) in Kannada, get some of the heaviest rainfall in India. Agumbe is nicknamed the Cherrapunji of the South. Jog Falls on the Sharavathi is the state’s best-known ಜಲಪಾತ, and it is dramatically different in July than in March.

Trees carry ritual weight too. The ಅರಳಿ ಮರ (peepal) and ಬೇವಿನ ಮರ (neem) are often planted together and circled by a raised platform with naga stones at the base — a fixture of almost every older Karnataka village.

Practice
  1. Describe today’s weather in one Kannada sentence using ಮಳೆ, ಬಿಸಿಲು or ಚಳಿ.
  2. Say ಮಳೆ and ಮಲೆ aloud until the retroflex difference is automatic.
  3. Find three Bengaluru place names containing ಕೆರೆ.
  4. Name five things you can see outside your window in Kannada.
  5. Write ಆಕಾಶ, ನದಿ, ಬೆಟ್ಟ and ಕಾಡು in Kannada script from memory.
