Time and Date in Telugu — Days, Months and Telling the Clock

Introduction Nothing makes a language feel practical faster than being able to say when. The moment you can tell someone “I’ll come at five o’clock on Monday”, you have crossed from tourist phrasebook into actual communication. That is what this lesson gives you: the complete time and date in Telugu toolkit — clock time, parts of the day, days of the week, months, and the everyday relative words like today, tomorrow and last week.

Telugu handles time in a refreshingly logical way. The hour is simply the number plus గంటలు, minutes are the number plus నిమిషాలు, and every weekday shares the same tail, -వారం. There is one quirk worth knowing early: Telugu speakers usually use the 12-hour clock and add a time-of-day word instead of a.m./p.m. — ఉదయం ఆరు గంటలు (6 in the morning), సాయంత్రం ఆరు గంటలు (6 in the evening). Once you internalise that habit, you will never be misunderstood.

You will also meet the two calendars that co-exist in Telugu life: the Gregorian months everyone uses at work, and the traditional lunar months like చైత్రం that govern festivals. Both are covered below, with audio for the words you will actually say out loud.

Each day is named after a planet-deity: సోమ (moon), మంగళ (Mars), బుధ (Mercury), గురు (Jupiter), శుక్ర (Venus), శని (Saturn). If you know any other Indian language, these will feel familiar.

Section 4 — Months & Relative Time Gregorian months are used with light Telugu spelling: జనవరి, ఫిబ్రవరి, మార్చి, ఏప్రిల్, మే, జూన్, జూలై, ఆగస్టు, సెప్టెంబర్, అక్టోబర్, నవంబర్, డిసెంబర్.

Traditional lunar months (used for festivals): చైత్రం, వైశాఖం, జ్యేష్ఠం, ఆషాఢం, శ్రావణం, భాద్రపదం, ఆశ్వయుజం, కార్తీకం, మార్గశిరం, పుష్యం, మాఘం, ఫాల్గుణం.

🗣️ Pronunciation Tips Two words in this lesson trip up nearly every learner. మధ్యాహ్నం looks terrifying but breaks cleanly into madh-yaah-nam — three beats, with the “hn” cluster pronounced as a breathy h flowing into n. సంవత్సరం is sam-vat-sa-ram, four even beats; don’t rush the middle. Also note that గంట has a retroflex ṭ — curl the tongue tip back to the roof of the mouth, unlike the English “t” in “tap”. Day names all carry a light, even stress; never hammer the -వారం ending.

❌ Common Pronunciation Errors మధ్యాహ్నం → “madyanam” ❌ — the aspirated ధ్య and the హ్న both get flattened. Slow it down: madh-yāh-naṁ. గంట → “ganta” with a dental t ❌ — it must be retroflex ṭ, tongue curled back. రాత్రి → “raatri” with a rolled English r ❌ — Telugu ర is a single light tap, and త్రి is one syllable, not “ta-ri”. నిమిషం → “nimisham” with sh as in “ship” ❌ — ష is retroflex, produced further back. ఎల్లుండి → “elundi” ❌ — hold the double ల్ల: el-luṇḍi. 💡 Native Speaker Tip In real conversation Telugu speakers drop గంటలు constantly. Asked ఎన్ని గంటలకు వస్తావు? (what time will you come?), a native will just say ఐదుకి (“at five”) or ఆరున్నరకి (“at six-thirty”). The -కి / -కు ending does the work of “at”. Also, “sharp/on the dot” is expressed with సరిగ్గా: సరిగ్గా తొమ్మిది గంటలకు = at 9 sharp. Using these two shortcuts makes you sound years ahead of your level.

🧠 Memory Trick నిన్న (ninna) = yesterday, మొన్న (monna) = day before yesterday. Rhyming pair — the one with the “m” is further back in time (m for “more days ago”). రేపు (rēpu) = tomorrow, ఎల్లుండి (elluṇḍi) = day after. Short word = near future; long word = further future. వారం ends every weekday and means “week” — one ending, seven words. గంట also means “bell”. Picture a temple bell ringing the hour. 🪔 Cultural Notes Telugu households run on two clocks. Office life follows the Gregorian calendar, but weddings, housewarmings and travel plans are often fixed by the పంచాంగం (pañchāṅgaṁ), the traditional almanac. Two words you will hear: ముహూర్తం (muhūrtaṁ), the auspicious moment chosen for an event, and రాహుకాలం (rāhukālaṁ), a roughly 90-minute daily window considered unlucky for beginnings. Don’t be surprised if a Telugu friend reschedules a 10:30 a.m. meeting to 12:00 for exactly this reason. The Telugu New Year, ఉగాది, falls in చైత్రం (March–April), not January.

⚠️ Common Mistakes Saying “గంటలు మూడు” ❌ — the number always comes first: మూడు గంటలు. Using a.m./p.m. literally — say ఉదయం / సాయంత్రం / రాత్రి before the hour instead. It’s far more natural. Confusing రోజు (day) with తేదీ (date) — ఏ రోజు? asks which weekday; ఏ తేదీ? asks the calendar number. Forgetting the -కి ending for “at” — ఐదు గంటలు is “five o’clock”; ఐదు గంటలకు is “at five o’clock”. Mixing గత (past) and వచ్చే (coming) — గత వారం = last week, వచ్చే వారం = next week. ✍️ 5 Practice Exercises Say your day: State in Telugu what time you wake up, eat lunch and sleep, using ఉదయం / మధ్యాహ్నం / రాత్రి. Fill in: ఈ రోజు ___వారం. (Say today’s actual weekday.) Translate: “I’ll come at seven-thirty in the evening.” Order these in time sequence: ఎల్లుండి, నిన్న, ఈ రోజు, మొన్న, రేపు. Clock drill: Say 1:30, 4:30 and 9:30 using the -న్నర ending. Answers: 3. నేను సాయంత్రం ఏడున్నరకి వస్తాను. — 4. మొన్న → నిన్న → ఈ రోజు → రేపు → ఎల్లుండి — 5. ఒకటిన్నర / నాలుగున్నర / తొమ్మిదిన్నర

📝 5 Quiz Questions How do you ask “What time is it?” → సమయం ఎంత? What does ఎల్లుండి mean? → The day after tomorrow Which suffix turns a number into “half past”? → -న్నర Translate గురువారం. → Thursday What word replaces “p.m.” for 8 at night? → రాత్రి (రాత్రి ఎనిమిది గంటలు) ❓ FAQs

Do Telugu speakers use the 24-hour clock?

Rarely in speech. Railway announcements and printed schedules use it, but conversation almost always uses 12-hour time plus ఉదయం / సాయంత్రం.

Are English month names acceptable?

Yes — జనవరి, మార్చి and so on are standard everywhere. Traditional lunar months appear mainly in festival and religious contexts.

What’s the difference between రోజు and దినం?

Both mean “day”. రోజు is everyday spoken Telugu; దినం is formal/literary and shows up in compounds like దినపత్రిక (daily newspaper).

How do I say “in two hours”?

రెండు గంటల్లో (reṇḍu gaṇṭallō). The -లో ending means “within/in”.

Why do Telugu festivals shift dates every year?

Because they follow the lunisolar calendar. Ugadi, Sankranti and Dasara are fixed to lunar months, which drift against the Gregorian calendar.
