📌 Quick Summary
- రంగు (rangu) means “colour” and attaches to any colour name: ఎరుపు రంగు = “the colour red”.
- Four core colours are pure Dravidian words: ఎరుపు, నలుపు, తెలుపు, పచ్చ. The rest borrow from Sanskrit, Urdu or English.
- Colour comes before the noun: నీలం చొక్కా = “blue shirt”.
Introduction
Colour words are the fastest vocabulary you will ever learn in Telugu, because you can practise them without leaving your chair. The wall, your shirt, your phone case, the sky outside — each one is a free flashcard. Once you know ten colour names you can build hundreds of real sentences, because Telugu simply places the colour in front of the object.
Telugu colour vocabulary has an interesting split personality. The oldest words — ఎరుపు, నలుపు, తెలుపు, పచ్చ — are pure Dravidian and appear in thousand-year-old poetry. Middle-layer words like నీలం, పసుపు, ఊదా come through Sanskrit. And modern shades — పింక్, గ్రే, ఆరెంజ్ — are borrowed from English and used comfortably by everyone in Hyderabad, Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam.
By the end of this lesson you will name a colour, ask “what colour is this?”, describe clothing and objects, and avoid the two mistakes that instantly mark a learner as a beginner.
1. The Eight Core Colours
| English | Telugu | Pronunciation | Listen |
|---|---|---|---|
| Colour | రంగు | Rangu | |
| Red | ఎరుపు | Erupu | |
| Blue | నీలం | Nīlaṁ | |
| Green | ఆకుపచ్చ | Ākupachcha | |
| Yellow | పసుపు | Pasupu | |
| White | తెలుపు | Telupu | |
| Black | నలుపు | Nalupu | |
| Brown | గోధుమ రంగు | Gōdhuma rangu |
Notice the logic: ఆకుపచ్చ is ఆకు (leaf) + పచ్చ, so “leaf-green”. గోధుమ means “wheat” — brown is simply “wheat colour”. Telugu names colours after the world it sees.
2. Everyday Shades
| English | Telugu | Pronunciation | Listen |
|---|---|---|---|
| Orange | నారింజ రంగు | Nāriñja rangu | |
| Pink | గులాబీ రంగు | Gulābī rangu | |
| Purple / violet | ఊదా రంగు | Ūdā rangu | |
| Grey | బూడిద రంగు | Būḍida rangu | |
| Golden | బంగారు రంగు | Bangāru rangu | |
| Silver | వెండి రంగు | Veṇḍi rangu | |
| Sky blue | ఆకాశ నీలం | Ākāśa nīlaṁ | |
| Cream | క్రీమ్ రంగు | Krīm rangu |
Again the poetry: గులాబీ is “rose”, బూడిద is “ash”, నారింజ is the orange fruit. Learn the object and the colour comes free.
3. Light, Dark and Description
| English | Telugu | Pronunciation | Listen |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dark (deep) | ముదురు | Muduru | |
| Light (pale) | లేత | Lēta | |
| Dark blue | ముదురు నీలం | Muduru nīlaṁ | |
| Light green | లేత ఆకుపచ్చ | Lēta ākupachcha | |
| Colourful | రంగురంగుల | Rangurangula | |
| Transparent | పారదర్శకం | Pāradarśakaṁ |
4. Colours in Real Sentences
| English | Telugu | Pronunciation | Listen |
|---|---|---|---|
| What colour is this? | ఇది ఏ రంగు? | Idi ē rangu? | |
| This is red | ఇది ఎరుపు రంగు | Idi erupu rangu | |
| I like blue | నాకు నీలం రంగు ఇష్టం | Nāku nīlaṁ rangu iṣṭaṁ | |
| Show me the green one | ఆకుపచ్చది చూపించండి | Ākupachchadi chūpiñchaṇḍi | |
| Is there another colour? | వేరే రంగు ఉందా? | Vērē rangu undā? |
🗣️ Pronunciation Tips
Telugu colour words hide two sounds English does not have. First, the double consonant in ఆకుపచ్చ must actually be held — “aaku-PACH-cha”, pressing the tongue for a beat. Second, the vowel ఊ in ఊదా is long: “OO-daa”, roughly twice the length of the u in “put”. Telugu is syllable-timed, so give every syllable equal weight — pa-su-pu, never “pSOOpu”. The final -u in ఎరుపు, నలుపు and తెలుపు is soft and almost swallowed.
❌ Common Pronunciation Errors
- ఎరుపు → “eh-ROO-poo” ❌ — the middle vowel is short and the stress almost flat.
- పసుపు → “pa-SOO-poo” ❌ — same trap; say pa-su-pu lightly.
- ఆకుపచ్చ → “aakupacha” ❌ — hold the doubled చ్చ.
- నీలం → “neelum” ❌ — the final ం is a nasal hum that closes the lips.
- గోధుమ with a hard d ❌ — ధ is aspirated and breathy.
💡 Native Speaker Tip
Real speakers rarely say the full ఎరుపు రంగు చొక్కా. They shorten the colour into an adjective: ఎర్ర చొక్కా (red shirt), నల్ల కారు (black car), తెల్ల కాగితం (white paper), పచ్చ చీర (green saree). These clipped forms sound instantly native. Keep the long form for standalone answers.
🧠 Memory Trick
- పసుపు is also the Telugu word for turmeric, which is bright yellow — one word, free hook.
- నలుపు — think “null” = nothing = darkness.
- గులాబీ — a gulab (rose) is pink.
- గోధుమ — wheat is brown.
🪔 Cultural Notes
Colour carries meaning in Telugu households. పసుపు (turmeric-yellow) and కుంకుమ (vermilion red) are auspicious and appear at every wedding, festival and housewarming. Red is the colour of celebration and of the goddess; a bride’s saree is usually red or deep pink, rarely black. Black is generally avoided at auspicious events, though a black thread is tied on babies to ward off the evil eye. During Sankranti, doorstep rangoli explodes in colour — the colour itself is treated as a blessing.
⚠️ Common Mistakes
- Saying రంగు ఎరుపు ❌ — reversed. Correct: ఎరుపు రంగు.
- Using ఆకుపచ్చ for unripe fruit ❌ — use పచ్చి: పచ్చి మామిడికాయ (raw mango).
- Forgetting the adjective form — నల్ల కుక్క is what people actually say, not నలుపు కుక్క.
- Mixing పసుపు (yellow) and పచ్చ (green) — anchor పసుపు to turmeric, పచ్చ to leaves.
- Dropping రంగు after borrowed words — say పింక్ రంగు in a full Telugu sentence.
