💬 Pronunciation Tips

  • Family words are full of doubled consonants, and the doubling is not decorative — it changes the word.
  • Amma (mother) needs a held mm; a single ama means nothing.
  • Same for అక్కయ్య (ak-ka-yya) and తమ్ముడు (tam-mu-ḍu).
  • Turning తాతయ్య into "tata-ya"; the yya is two syllables of glide.
  • Pronouncing కూతురు as "kuthuru" with an English th.

⚠️ Common Mistakes

  • Using one word for all uncles.
  • మామయ్య ≠ చిన్నాన్న — they're different sides of the family.
  • Calling an elder sibling by name.
  • Always అన్నయ్య/అక్కయ్య, even at fifty years old.
  • Confusing అత్తయ్య (father's sister) with పిన్ని (mother's younger sister).

🌴 Culture Note

  • Use అన్నయ్య and అక్కయ్య with strangers who look slightly older than you — the vegetable seller, the auto driver, a senior colleague.
  • It instantly softens the interaction.
  • For someone much older, అంకుల్/ఆంటీ (borrowed English) or తాతయ్య/అమ్మమ్మ works.
  • For siblings, remember A comes before T: Annayya and Akkayya are the elder ones; Tammudu and chellelu are younger.
  • Joint families still shape the vocabulary: pedananna and chinnanna live in the same compound as your father, which is why they needed distinct names.

Telugu Transliteration English తాతయ్య Tātayya Grandfather అమ్మమ్మ Ammamma Maternal grandmother (mother's mother) నానమ్మ Nānamma Paternal grandmother (father's mother) ముత్తాత Muttāta Great-grandfather పెద్దలు Peddalu Elders (collective, respectful) Key insight: Telugu distinguishes the two grandmothers by whose mother she is — అమ్మమ్మ literally stacks amma + amma, "mother's mother." English has no equivalent, and Telugu families find that genuinely confusing.

Telugu Transliteration Exact relation మామయ్య Māmayya Mother's brother (maternal uncle) పెదనాన్న Pedananna Father's elder brother చిన్నాన్న Cinnānna Father's younger brother అత్తయ్య Attayya Father's sister / mother-in-law పెద్దమ్మ Peddamma Mother's elder sister పిన్ని Pinni Mother's younger sister Notice the logic: your father's brothers are graded by age (pedda = big, cinna = small) because they function as extra fathers. Your mother's brother gets his own word entirely — మామయ్య — and in Telugu tradition he holds a special ceremonial role at weddings and naming ceremonies.
