Pronunciation Tips

Pronunciation Tips:

  • Illai – il-lai double l.
  • Mudiyadhu – mu-di-ya-dhu cannot soft dh.
  • Vendaam – ven-daam long aa.
  • Koodathu – koo-da-thu should not long oo.
  • Matten – maat-ten I won’t double t.
Common Mistakes

Common Mistakes:

  • Using illa everywhere for negative – Tamil has specific: theriyaadhu for don’t know not theriya illa? Both okay but theriyaadhu more common.
  • Mixing vendaam vs kudathu: vendaam I don’t want, koodathu you should not (prohibition stronger).
  • Saying don’t do as seyyadhe informal rude to elders – use pannaadheenga please don’t do respectful.
  • Varala vs varadhu – varala didn’t come past, varadhu won’t come or doesn’t come habitual.
Cultural Note & Practice

Cultural Note: Tamil softens negative with illa and adding konjam: Mudiyuma? Can? Mudiyadhu? Cannot? But softer Mudiyala konjam difficult? Add konjam. Direct no rude – Tamil says paarkkalaam let’s see instead of direct illa for refusal to be polite.

Practice:

  1. No money: Enkitta kasu illa.
  2. Don’t know: Enakku theriyadhu.
  3. Won’t come: Naan varamaatten.
  4. Cannot: Inga photo edukka koodathu? Should not? Actually prohibition.
  5. Don’t: Idha pannadheenga please don’t do.
