On an Indian train, the person opposite will learn your country, occupation, marital status and monthly income within twenty minutes, and will then offer you food. This is not intrusion, it is how long journeys pass. Knowing how to participate, deflect gently and reciprocate makes the difference between an uncomfortable trip and the best part of your travels.
The Standard Opening Sequence
This sequence is close to fixed. Speaking any Hindi at all produces genuine delight and a follow-up question about where you learned it, which is worth having an answer ready for. घूमना means to roam or travel for pleasure and is the word used for tourism.
Answering the Personal Questions
बस, गुज़ारा हो जाता है — it’s enough to manage — is the perfect answer to the salary question. It is honest, modest, closes the topic and is exactly what an Indian would say. Refusing to answer creates awkwardness; a light non-answer does not.
Accepting and Offering Food
Sharing food on trains is deeply ingrained. Refusing twice and accepting on the third offer is the expected pattern, and taking a small amount is far better than a firm no. Carrying something to offer in return — biscuits, fruit, namkeen — turns you from a curiosity into a fellow traveller.
Asking a fellow passenger to alert you before your station is completely normal, and people take the responsibility seriously. For unwanted attention or persistent touts, a firm नहीं, धन्यवाद repeated without further engagement works better than explanation — arguing invites more conversation.
Cultural Note
Curiosity about foreigners is genuine rather than calculated in most of India, especially away from tourist hubs. Photograph requests are common and usually harmless, though you are free to decline with a smile.
Distinguish hospitality from a sales pitch. Someone on a train sharing food expects nothing. Someone approaching you outside a monument offering to show you a ‘government emporium’ is working on commission. The tell is usually who initiated contact and whether money enters the conversation early.
Reciprocity matters more than the value of what you give. Sharing your snacks, showing photographs of your home, or simply asking the same questions back marks you as a participant rather than a spectacle, and Indian travellers respond warmly to it.
Pronunciation Tips
घूमने opens with the aspirated gh as one sound and has a long oo. गुज़ारा carries a nukta z. स्वादिष्ट has an initial cluster and a retroflex ṣṭ near the end — take it slowly. उतरना is three light beats. And अकेले is three even beats with no stress on any syllable.
Common Mistakes
- Refusing shared food outright. Accept a small amount.
- Refusing to answer the salary question instead of deflecting lightly.
- Arguing with touts, which prolongs the encounter. Repeat नहीं, धन्यवाद and disengage.
- Only answering questions and never asking any back.
- Assuming every friendly approach is a scam, which closes off genuine hospitality.
Practice Exercises
- Answer the full opening sequence about where you are from and why you are travelling.
- Deflect the salary and marriage questions in one sentence each.
- Practise the three-stage food refusal and acceptance.
- Ask a fellow passenger to tell you when your station arrives.
- Turn the conversation around by asking five questions back.
