Telugu makes this easier than English in one delightful way: there is no present-tense verb “to be”. You don’t say “my name is Ravi”, you say నా పేరు రవి — “my name Ravi”. Two words plus your name and you’ve made a grammatically perfect Telugu sentence on day one. The same shortcut works for your city, your job and your age
Where Telugu asks a little more of you is in the verb endings. Talking about yourself, verbs end in -ను (వచ్చాను = I came, చేస్తాను = I do). - Two sounds decide how native your intro feels. First, ళ (as in పెళ్ళి) — a retroflex l with the tongue curled far back; English has nothing like it, so practise it in isolation. Second, the -ంటాను / -ుంటాను ending in ఉంటాను, చేస్తాను — the nasal ం flows straight into a retroflex ṭ, which is why uṇṭānu sounds like one smooth unit, not “un-taa-nu”. Also keep వచ్చాను crisp: the double చ్చ must be held, or it drifts toward వచాను, which sounds unfinished

- పేరు → "peru" with a short e ❌ — it's a long ē: pē-ru. నేర్చుకుంటున్నాను → collapsing to "nerchukuntanu" ❌ — six syllables, all of them pronounced: nēr-chu-kuṇ-ṭun-nā-nu. విద్యార్థిని → "vidyarthini" with a plain th ❌ — థ is aspirated, breathy. క్షమించండి → "shamichandi" ❌ — the క్ష cluster is ksh, both consonants sounded. ఉంటాను → "untanu" with dental t ❌ — retroflex ṭ, tongue curled. 💡 Native Speaker Tip Telugu speakers rarely deliver a monologue introduction. They introduce one fact and hand the conversation back: "నా పేరు అనిల్. మీ పేరు?" — then "నేను వరంగల్ నుంచి. మీరు?" The single word మీరు? ("and you?") does all the work. Also, in Andhra and Telangana it's completely normal to be asked your native place (మీ ఊరు ఏది?) within thirty seconds of meeting. It isn't nosiness — regional roots are how people place each other socially, and answering warmly builds instant rapport.

- Introductions in Telugu culture reach beyond the individual. మీ ఊరు ఏది? (which is your native village/town?) often matters more than where you currently live, and family questions — మీ నాన్నగారు ఏం చేస్తారు? — are normal small talk, not intrusion. Adding -గారు to a name (రవి గారు, సునీత గారు) is the standard respectful form and is expected for anyone older or senior at work. Among strangers of similar age, అన్నా (brother) and అక్కా (sister) are used freely as friendly address terms, even with shopkeepers and auto drivers.

- Adding a "to be" verb ❌ — నా పేరు ఉంది రవి is wrong. Just నా పేరు రవి. Using నా vs మా incorrectly — నా = my (personal: నా పేరు), మా = our (family/group: మా ఇల్లు, మా ఊరు). Telugu prefers మా for anything shared with family. Saying నేను ఇరవై ఐదు సంవత్సరాలు ❌ — age uses the dative: నాకు ఇరవై ఐదు సంవత్సరాలు. Forgetting -గారు with elders — using a bare first name for a senior sounds abrupt. Mismatching gender endings in professions — a woman saying ఉపాధ్యాయుడిని is a noticeable slip; use ఉపాధ్యాయురాలిని. ✍️ 5 Practice Exercises Write your own intro using the Section 5 template with your real details, then say it aloud three times. Do I really not need a verb for "is"?
- Correct — in the present tense Telugu omits it. Past and future do need verbs: నా పేరు రవి (present) vs నేను వచ్చాను (past).
Is it rude to be asked about family or salary?
- Family questions are normal warmth. Salary questions do happen among acquaintances; a smiling vague answer is perfectly acceptable.
Should I introduce myself in Telugu at a job interview in Hyderabad?

What if I can't understand the reply?
- Say కొంచెం నెమ్మదిగా మాట్లాడండి (please speak slowly) or మళ్ళీ చెప్పండి (please say it again). Both are polite and very commonly used.
Is అన్నా/అక్కా appropriate for strangers?
- Yes, for people roughly your age or a bit older. For clearly senior people use సార్, మేడమ్ or -గారు.
