Counting in Malayalam for Prices and Daily Life

⭐ Beginner⏱ ⏱️ 13 minutes📊 Lesson 17 of 126

Malayalam numbers are useful everywhere: bus tickets, shop prices, phone numbers, school marks, house numbers, and festival dates. Many Malayalis switch between Malayalam and English numbers, especially in cities, but understanding the Malayalam forms helps with elders, markets, and local announcements. Start with one to ten, then learn common round numbers. Pay attention to retroflex sounds in രണ്ട് (raṇṭŭ), എട്ട് (eṭṭŭ), and നൂറ് (nūṟŭ).

Number Word Cards

Repeat the numbers in small groups. Say one to ten first, then practise tens and large Indian-numbering words like ലക്ഷം (lakṣam) and കോടി (kōṭi). Malayalam speakers often use these large words in property, salary, and news contexts.

How Numbers Are Used

In everyday Kerala speech, you may hear Malayalam numbers with English nouns: രണ്ട് ticket, മൂന്നു tea, or പത്ത് rupees. This code-mixing is normal. For prices, people may switch to English if the amount is large, but Malayalam numbers remain common in markets, buses, small shops, and family instructions.

  • Use ഒന്ന് (onnŭ) also to soften requests, as in ഒന്ന് പറയൂ (onnŭ paṟayū), please say once.
  • Use ലക്ഷം (lakṣam) for one lakh, a very common Indian-numbering word.
  • Use കോടി (kōṭi) for crore in news and finance talk.
Pronunciation Tips

Numbers are short, so small pronunciation errors stand out. രണ്ട് (raṇṭŭ) has retroflex ṇṭ. എട്ട് (eṭṭŭ) has a doubled retroflex ṭṭ. ഏഴ് (ēzhŭ) contains ഴ (zha), so do not say ēlu. ആറ് (āṟŭ) uses a crisp Malayalam ṟ.

  • Hold the long vowel in മൂന്ന് (mūnnŭ).
  • Do not add an English t sound at the end of പത്ത് (pathŭ).
  • Break പന്ത്രണ്ട് (panthraṇṭŭ) slowly before speaking fast.
Common Mistakes
  • Mixing ഏഴ് (ēzhŭ), seven, with എട്ട് (eṭṭŭ), eight, because both feel unfamiliar.
  • Pronouncing രണ്ട് (raṇṭŭ) as rand without the retroflex ṇṭ.
  • Forgetting that ലക്ഷം (lakṣam) and കോടി (kōṭi) are part of Indian numbering, not Western million language.
  • Using English numbers with elders who expect Malayalam.
  • Rushing long forms like പതിനൊന്ന് (pathinonnu) and പന്ത്രണ്ട് (panthraṇṭŭ).
Cultural Note

Kerala uses Malayalam numbers less in writing than older generations once did, but spoken number words remain alive. You will hear them in fish markets, vegetable shops, temples, churches, mosques, lotteries, bus stands, and family budgeting. Gulf families often discuss salaries and remittances using a mix of Malayalam, English, dirham, riyal, lakh, and crore vocabulary.

Mini Use Case

When shopping, do not panic if the seller says the amount quickly. Listen for the last number and the word രൂപ (rūpa), rupee. You can repeat the number as a question: പത്ത്? (pathŭ?), ten? This is natural and safer than pretending you understood.

Practice Exercises
  1. Count from ഒന്ന് (onnŭ) to പത്ത് (pathŭ) three times.
  2. Say your phone number using Malayalam digits slowly.
  3. Practise ഏഴ് (ēzhŭ), എട്ട് (eṭṭŭ), and ആറ് (āṟŭ) separately.
  4. Write five prices using Malayalam number words and രൂപ (rūpa).
  5. Listen to a Malayalam bus or market clip and catch any number.

Language Mastery

To master any language, immersion is essential. Try to surround yourself with the language as much as possible. Listen to music, watch movies with subtitles, and try to think in the language for simple daily tasks. This will help you transition from translating in your head to speaking naturally. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes; every speaker started where you are now. Consistency is more important than speed. Even ten minutes a day is better than two hours once a week. Keep practicing, and you will be amazed at your progress in just a few months!
