Reusable Kannada Sentence Patterns

⭐⭐ Intermediate⏱ ⏱️ 11 minutes📊 Lesson 99 of 126

Fluency is mostly pattern recognition. Ten templates with swappable slots will produce more usable Kannada than a thousand memorised words, because they let you build sentences you have never heard. Each pattern below is a frame — learn the shape, then change the filling.

Wanting and Needing

Pattern: ನನಗೆ + thing + ಬೇಕು. Kannada uses the dative for all wanting.

ನನಗೆ ನೀರು ಬೇಕು
nanage neeru beku
I want water
ನನಗೆ ಸಮಯ ಬೇಕು
nanage samaya beku
I need time
ನನಗೆ ಇದು ಬೇಡ
nanage idu beda
I don’t want this
ನಿಮಗೆ ಏನು ಬೇಕು?
nimage enu beku?
What do you want?
ನನಗೆ ಇಷ್ಟ
nanage ishta
I like it
ನನಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತು
nanage gottu
I know

The same frame handles liking, knowing, hunger and feeling. Swap ಬೇಕು for ಇಷ್ಟ, ಗೊತ್ತು or ಹಸಿವಾಗಿದೆ and the structure holds.

Going, Doing and Time

Pattern: subject + time + place-ಗೆ + verb. The verb always comes last.

ನಾನು ಮನೆಗೆ ಹೋಗ್ತೀನಿ
naanu manege hogteeni
I’m going home
ನಾನು ನಾಳೆ ಬರ್ತೀನಿ
naanu naale barteeni
I’ll come tomorrow
ಅವರು ಆಫೀಸಿಗೆ ಹೋದರು
avaru aafisige hodaru
They went to the office
ನಾವು ಸಂಜೆ ಸಿಗೋಣ
naavu sanje sigona
Let’s meet in the evening
ನಾನು ಈಗ ಮಾಡ್ತಿದ್ದೀನಿ
naanu eega maadtiddeeni
I’m doing it now

Swap the place, the time and the verb independently and one pattern becomes dozens of sentences. ಮನೆಗೆ can become ಅಂಗಡಿಗೆ, ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿಗೆ or ಶಾಲೆಗೆ.

Asking and Requesting
ಇದು ಎಷ್ಟು?
idu eshtu?
How much is this?
ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ನೀರು ಕೊಡಿ
swalpa neeru kodi
Please give a little water
ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡ್ತೀರಾ?
swalpa sahaaya maadteeraa?
Could you help a little?
ಎಲ್ಲಿ ಇದೆ?
elli ide?
Where is it?
ಹೋಗಬಹುದಾ?
hogabahudaa?
May I go?
ಇದು ಏನು?
idu enu?
What is this?

The request frame is ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ + thing + polite verb. ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ softens anything, and the -ಇ ending on the verb carries the politeness without needing a word for ‘please’.

Describing and Negating
ಇದು ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿದೆ
idu chennaagide
This is good
ಮನೆ ದೊಡ್ಡದಾಗಿದೆ
mane doddadaagide
The house is big
ಇದು ನನ್ನದಲ್ಲ
idu nannadalla
This is not mine
ಹಣ ಇಲ್ಲ
hana illa
There is no money
ನನಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ
nanage gottilla
I don’t know
ಇವತ್ತು ಆಗಲ್ಲ
ivattu aagalla
It’s not possible today

Note the three negatives doing different jobs. ಅಲ್ಲ denies identity, ಇಲ್ಲ denies existence, and ಆಗಲ್ಲ denies possibility. Choosing correctly is what makes a negative sentence sound native.

A word on how to use these patterns productively. The mistake learners make is treating a template as a sentence to memorise rather than a frame to fill. The value is in the slot: once ನನಗೆ … ಬೇಕು is automatic, every new noun you learn immediately becomes a usable sentence without any further work.

It also helps to notice which patterns cluster. The dative frame handles wanting, liking, knowing, needing, hunger and language ability — six different English constructions collapsing into one Kannada shape. Learners who spot that stop translating six separate structures and start reaching for a single reliable one.

Build your own additions as you go. When you hear a sentence that works, strip out the changeable part and keep the frame. A notebook of twenty personal templates, drawn from conversations you actually had, is worth more than any published list because the slots match your own life.

Pronunciation Tips
  1. Say whole patterns as single units rather than word by word.
  2. Case endings attach with no pause: ಮನೆಗೆ is one word.
  3. Keep the verb ending light — the weight sits on the root.
  4. ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ is one beat at the start of a request.
  5. Kannada sentences fall in pitch at the end, where the verb sits.
Common Mistakes
  • Putting the verb in the middle. It always goes last, in every pattern here.
  • Using ನಾನು where the dative is needed. Wanting, liking and knowing all take ನನಗೆ.
  • Mixing up the three negatives. ಅಲ್ಲ, ಇಲ್ಲ and ಆಗಲ್ಲ are not interchangeable.
  • Translating word by word from English. Build the Kannada frame first, then fill it.
  • Forgetting the polite verb ending. ಕೊಡು is an order; ಕೊಡಿ is a request.
Practice
  1. Take the ನನಗೆ … ಬೇಕು frame and produce eight sentences.
  2. Build five going-somewhere sentences with different places and times.
  3. Make three requests using ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ and a polite verb.
  4. Write one sentence with each of the three negatives.
  5. Describe five objects using the -ಆಗಿದೆ pattern.
