Learning words in opposite pairs is more efficient than learning them singly, because each one gives you a hook for the other. Kannada calls these ವಿರುದ್ಧ ಪದಗಳು and Karnataka schools drill them as a standard exercise. This page groups the pairs you will actually use.
Size and Quantity
ಜಾಸ್ತಿ and ಕಡಿಮೆ are the pair you will use most, because they cover price negotiation, quantity and intensity all at once. ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಕಡಿಮೆ ಮಾಡಿ is how you ask for a discount.
Quality and Character
ಸರಿ and ತಪ್ಪು do double duty. Beyond correct and wrong, ಸರಿ means okay and agreed, while ತಪ್ಪು is what you say when admitting a mistake: ನನ್ನ ತಪ್ಪು.
Direction, Position and Time
Remember that Kannada puts position words after the noun: ಮೇಜಿನ ಮೇಲೆ is ‘on the table’, literally ‘table-of above’. The pair itself is easy; the word order is what trips learners.
People, Feeling and Action
ಬರು and ಹೋಗು form the most-used verb pair in the language, and they appear inside the standard farewell ಹೋಗಿ ಬರ್ತೀನಿ — ‘I’ll go and come’.
A note on why pairs work so well for Kannada specifically. A large number of these opposites are not related words at all — ದೋಡ್ಡ and ಚಿಕ್ಕ share no root, unlike English pairs such as happy and unhappy that are built from one another. Kannada rarely negates an adjective to form its opposite, so the two words genuinely must be learned together or you will know only half of each concept.
Where Kannada does negate, it does so with a separate word rather than a prefix. ‘Not good’ is ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದಲ್ಲ rather than a single negated adjective, and ಅ- prefixes such as ಅಶುಭ appear only in Sanskrit borrowings. This is worth knowing because learners often try to construct an opposite by negation and produce something grammatical but unnatural.
Karnataka schools drill these pairs as ವಿರುದ್ಧ ಪದಗಳು exercises for exactly this reason, and every Kannada-educated adult has a shared stock of them.

Pronunciation Tips
- ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ and ಸುಳ್ಳು both have doubled retroflex ಳ.
- ದುಃಖ contains the visarga ಃ — a soft breath before the kha.
- ಸ್ವಚ್ಛ has a cluster and an aspirated ಛ. Take it slowly.
- ಎಡ and ಬಲ are short. Do not stretch the vowels.
- ಹೆಣ್ಣು has a doubled retroflex ಣ that must be held.
Common Mistakes
- Putting position words before the noun. Kannada uses postpositions: ಮೇಜಿನ ಮೇಲೆ, never the reverse.
- Confusing ಚಿಕ್ಕ and ಸಣ್ಣ. Both mean small, but ಸಣ್ಣ leans towards thin or slight.
- Using ಹಳೆಯ for an old person. Objects only. People take ವಯಸ್ಸಾದ.
- Mixing ಎಡ and ಬಲ under pressure. Drill them until instant — it matters in a moving auto.
- Flattening ಳ in ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ and ಸುಳ್ಳು. The retroflex carries the word.
Practice
- Cover one column and produce the opposite for ten pairs.
- Use five position pairs in sentences with correct word order.
- Say ಎಡಕ್ಕೆ and ಬಲಕ್ಕೆ while giving someone directions.
- Write eight pairs in Kannada script from memory.
- Describe one object using three opposite pairs.
