The standard Kannada birthday wish is ಜನ್ಮದಿನದ ಶುಭಾಶಯಗಳು, and it works for everyone. What changes with the relationship is what you add after it — a blessing for an elder, a joke for a friend, a wish for long life for a child. The Core Wishes
ಹುಟ್ಟುಹಬ್ಬ is the native Kannada word — literally ‘birth festival’ — and sounds warmer than the Sanskritic ಜನ್ಮದಿನ. Both are correct; ಹುಟ್ಟುಹಬ್ಬ is what families actually say.
ಶುಭಾಶಯಗಳು is the all-purpose ‘greetings’ and attaches to any occasion with the possessive -ದ. Learn this one word and you can construct a wish for anything.
By Relationship
The -ಅಲಿ ending makes a blessing: ಸಿಗಲಿ (may you get), ಆಗಲಿ (may it be), ಈಡೇರಲಿ (may it be fulfilled). This is the single most useful pattern for any wish in Kannada.
ನೂರು ವರ್ಷ ಬಾಳು — live a hundred years — is the traditional blessing from an elder to a younger person. You would not say it upward to someone older than you.
Longer Messages to Send
ಕನಸು ನನಸಾಗಲಿ is a small piece of wordplay — ಕನಸು is dream and ನನಸು is reality, so ‘may your dream become real’ rhymes in Kannada. It appears on greeting cards constantly.
String two or three of these together for a message. A typical Kannada birthday text is warmer and longer than an English one, and simply sending HBD to an elder would be noticeably curt.
Pronunciation Tips
- ಶುಭಾಶಯಗಳು is long — shu-bhaa-sha-ya-ga-lu. Keep every syllable light.
- ಹುಟ್ಟುಹಬ್ಬ has a doubled retroflex t and a doubled b.
- ಆಯುರಾರೋಗ್ಯ has the cluster ಗ್ಯ at the end.
- ಆಶೀರ್ವಾದ has ರ್ವ. Say ‘aa-sheer-vaa-da’.
- The -ಅಲಿ blessing ending is unstressed and light.
Common Mistakes
- Using ನೂರು ವರ್ಷ ಬಾಳು to an elder. It is a blessing given downward, from older to younger.
- Sending a bare ‘HBD’ to family or elders. Curt in a culture where wishes are warm and longer.
- Using ಅಭಿನಂದನೆಗಳು for a birthday. That means congratulations, for achievements rather than birthdays.
- Forgetting the possessive -ದ. It is ಜನ್ಮದಿನದ ಶುಭಾಶಯಗಳು, not two separate words.
- Using ನೀನು forms with an elder. Switch to ನಿಮಗೆ and ನಿಮ್ಮ.

Cultural Note — Birthdays in Karnataka
Traditional Karnataka birthdays are marked by the ನಕ್ಷತ್ರ rather than the calendar date. Many families observe the birth star, which falls on a different Gregorian date each year, and older relatives may celebrate that rather than the date on your documents.
A traditional birthday morning involves an oil bath, new clothes, touching the feet of elders for blessings, and a temple visit. ಪಾಯಸ is made at home, and in many households the birthday person is fed first. Cake and candles have been added rather than replacing this.
Milestone birthdays get their own ceremonies. ಷಷ್ಟ್ಯಬ್ದಪೂರ್ತಿ marks a man’s sixtieth year and is celebrated with a ritual re-marriage of the couple; ಸಹಸ್ರಚಂದ್ರ ದರ್ಶನ marks the eightieth, when a person has seen a thousand full moons. Both are substantial family events.
