⭐ Beginner⏱ ⏱️ 10 minutes📊 Lesson 80 of 126

One pattern covers every festival wish in Kannada: festival name plus -ದ plus ಶುಭಾಶಯಗಳು. Learn that and you can wish someone correctly on any occasion, including ones you have never heard of. This page gives you the specific wishes for Karnataka’s major festivals plus the blessings that go with each.

The -ದ is a possessive linking the festival to the wishes — literally ‘greetings of Ugadi’. Some festival names take it and some do not, depending on how the word ends, but nobody will mind if you include it either way.

ಶುಭಾಶಯಗಳು is plural. The singular ಶುಭಾಶಯ exists but the plural is what people use, in speech and in writing.

ಎಳ್ಳು ಬೆಲ್ಲ ತಿಂದು ಒಳ್ಳೆ ಮಾತಾಡು is said while handing over the Sankranti mixture of sesame and jaggery. It means ‘eat this and speak sweetly’ and is one of the loveliest greetings in the language.

ಬನ್ನಿ ಬಂಗಾರದಂತೆ ಇರೋಣ accompanies the exchange of shami leaves on Vijayadashami in North Karnataka. The leaves stand in for gold, and the line means ‘let us be as gold to each other’.

Sending and Replying
ನಿಮಗೂ ಶುಭಾಶಯಗಳು
nimagoo shubhaashayagalu
Wishes to you too
ನಿಮಗೂ ಹಾಗೇ
nimagoo haage
Same to you
ಧನ್ಯವಾದ, ನಿಮಗೂ
dhanyavaada, nimagoo
Thank you, and to you
ಮನೆಯವರಿಗೆಲ್ಲ ಶುಭಾಶಯಗಳು
maneyavarigella shubhaashayagalu
Wishes to your whole family
ಹಬ್ಬ ಹೇಗಿತ್ತು?
habba hegittu?
How was the festival?

ನಿಮಗೂ — ‘to you too’ — is the essential reply. The -ಊ ending means ‘also’ and attaches to any pronoun: ನಿಮಗೂ, ನಿನಗೂ, ಅವರಿಗೂ.

Adding ಮನೆಯವರಿಗೆಲ್ಲ — to everyone at home — turns a personal wish into a family one, which is how most Kannada festival greetings are framed.

Pronunciation Tips
  1. ಶುಭಾಶಯಗಳು is six light syllables with a retroflex ಳ near the end.
  2. ರಾಜ್ಯೋತ್ಸವ contains ತ್ಸ — ‘raaj-yot-sa-va’.
  3. ಎಳ್ಳು and ಬೆಲ್ಲ both have doubled consonants.
  4. ನಿಮಗೂ ends on a long oo carrying the sense of ‘also’.
  5. ಗೆಲ್ಗೆ is an older literary form — ‘gel-ge’, two clipped beats.
Common Mistakes
  • Using the English festival name in a Kannada sentence. Say ಯುಗಾದಿ and ದೀಪಾವಳಿ — it lands very differently.
  • Using the singular ಶುಭಾಶಯ. The plural ಶುಭಾಶಯಗಳು is standard.
  • Wishing only the person, not the family. Add ಮನೆಯವರಿಗೆಲ್ಲ.
  • Treating Rajyotsava as religious. It celebrates the state’s formation and the language.
  • Forgetting to reply. ನಿಮಗೂ ಶುಭಾಶಯಗಳು is expected, not optional.
Practice
  1. Build a wish for four different festivals using the same pattern.
  2. Practise the reply ನಿಮಗೂ ಶುಭಾಶಯಗಳು until it is automatic.
  3. Send one festival greeting in Kannada script.
  4. Learn the Sankranti line ಎಳ್ಳು ಬೆಲ್ಲ ತಿಂದು ಒಳ್ಳೆ ಮಾತಾಡು.
  5. Add ಮನೆಯವರಿಗೆಲ್ಲ to a wish and notice how it changes the tone.
Cultural Note — How Wishes Travel

Festival wishing in Karnataka has moved substantially onto WhatsApp, and the family group is where most of it happens now. Forwarded images with Kannada text, good-morning graphics and festival greetings circulate in enormous volume, particularly among older relatives, and replying to them is a real social obligation.

In person, the exchange still has physical elements. Sankranti means handing over ಎಳ್ಳು ಬೆಲ್ಲ while saying the line; Vijayadashami in the north means exchanging ಬನ್ನಿ leaves; Ugadi means plates of ಒಬ್ಬಟ್ಟು travelling between neighbouring houses. The plate is never returned empty.

For diaspora families, festival wishes carry extra weight. A message in Kannada script to a parent or grandparent in Karnataka on Ugadi morning means considerably more than an English one, and it is one of the easiest ways a learner’s effort produces genuine warmth.
