The Kannada Phrases You Will Use Every Single Day

⭐ Beginner⏱ ⏱️ 12 minutes📊 Lesson 32 of 126

If you only learn one page of phrases, make it this one. These are the sentences that recur dozens of times a day regardless of who you are talking to — agreeing, refusing, asking someone to wait, saying you forgot. They are short, they are high frequency, and getting them automatic does more for your fluency than three hundred nouns.

The Absolute Essentials
ಸರಿ
sari
Okay / right / correct
ಆಯ್ತು
aaytu
Done / okay / understood
ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ
gottilla
I don’t know
ಗೊತ್ತು
gottu
I know
ಬೇಕು
beku
I want / need
ಬೇಡ
beda
I don’t want

These ten words carry an astonishing amount of a Kannada day. ಸರಿ and ಆಯ್ತು alone will get you through most transactional exchanges, and the ಬೇಕು / ಬೇಡ pair handles every offer you will ever be made.

Note that ಇಲ್ಲ is doing double duty as both ‘no’ and ‘there isn’t’. Kannada has no single word for ‘no’ the way English does — you negate the specific thing. Asked whether you want coffee, you say ಬೇಡ, not ಇಲ್ಲ.

Getting Through the Day
ಎದ್ದೆ
edde
I woke up
ಸ್ನಾನ ಮಾಡ್ತೀನಿ
snaana maadteeni
I’m going to bathe
ತಿಂಡಿ ಆಯ್ತಾ?
tindi aayta?
Have you had breakfast?
ಹೊರಗೆ ಹೋಗ್ತಿದ್ದೀನಿ
horage hogtiddeeni
I’m going out
ಬಂದೆ
bande
I’ve come / just coming
ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ತಡ ಆಗುತ್ತೆ
swalpa tada aagutte
I’ll be a little late

ಬಂದೆ is technically past tense — ‘I came’ — but Kannada speakers use it to mean ‘I’m coming right now’. Someone calling from the next room gets ಬಂದೆ as the answer. Taking it literally will confuse you.

The -ಓಣ ending makes a ‘let’s’ suggestion: ಹೋಗೋಣ (let’s go), ಮಾಡೋಣ (let’s do it), ಸಿಗೋಣ (let’s meet). One ending, endless sentences.

Reacting, Filling Space and Small Requests
ಹೌದಾ?
haudaa?
Really? / is that so?
ಹೌದು
haudu
Yes / that’s right
ಅಯ್ಯೋ
ayyo
Oh no! — sympathy or dismay
ಏನಂತೆ?
enante?
What did they say?
ಅಂದ್ರೆ?
andre?
Meaning? / so?
ಒಂದ್ನಿಮಿಷ
ondnimisha
One minute
ಆಮೇಲೆ
aamele
After that / later

ಅಯ್ಯೋ is essential and untranslatable. It covers sympathy, mild horror, exasperation and self-directed dismay. Used correctly it makes you sound far more natural than any grammatically perfect sentence — it signals you are reacting in Kannada rather than translating.

ಮತ್ತೆ? asked with a rising tone keeps a conversation going. It is the Kannada equivalent of ‘and?’ and is how people signal they are still listening and want more.

ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡಿ
swalpa sahaaya maadi
Please help a little
ಇದನ್ನ ಕೊಡಿ
idanna kodi
Please give this
ಮರೆತುಬಿಟ್ಟೆ
maretubitte
I forgot
ಗೊತ್ತಾಗಲಿಲ್ಲ
gottaagalilla
I didn’t realise
ಆಗುತ್ತಾ?
aagutta?
Is that possible?
ಆಗಲ್ಲ
aagalla
That’s not possible

ಆಗುತ್ತಾ? and ಆಗಲ್ಲ are a very useful pair. They ask and answer whether something is feasible, and they work for everything from a delivery time to a favour to a restaurant substitution.

Pronunciation Tips
  1. ಆಯ್ತು is one compressed syllable and a half — ‘aaytu’, not ‘aa-ya-tu’.
  2. ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ has a doubled t and a doubled l. Both held.
  3. ಅಯ್ಯೋ has a doubled y. Stretch it for emphasis — that is how it is actually used.
  4. ಪರವಾಗಿಲ್ಲ compresses in speech to ‘parvaagilla’.
  5. Spoken Kannada contracts heavily. ಒಂದು ನಿಮಿಷ becomes ಒಂದ್ನಿಮಿಷ. Imitate the contraction.
Common Mistakes
  • Using ಇಲ್ಲ to refuse an offer. Offers are refused with ಬೇಡ. ಇಲ್ಲ means ‘there isn’t’.
  • Taking ಬಂದೆ literally. It means ‘coming now’, not ‘I already came’.
  • Speaking in full uncontracted forms. Textbook Kannada is uncontracted; real Kannada is not.
  • Never using ಅಯ್ಯೋ. Learners avoid it as slang. It is not slang — it is core emotional vocabulary.
  • Saying ಹೌದು when you mean ಸರಿ. ಹೌದು confirms a fact; ಸರಿ agrees to a plan.
Cultural Note — The Rhythm of a Kannada Day

Karnataka households run on early mornings. Coffee is made before six in many homes, the newspaper arrives around then, and the ರಂಗೋಲಿ goes down at the doorstep before the sun is properly up. Calling someone at seven in the morning is completely normal; calling at ten at night is less so.

Food anchors the day and the vocabulary reflects it. ತಿಂಡಿ in the morning, ಊಟ at midday, coffee at four, ಊಟ again at night. Asking someone whether they have eaten is a genuine expression of care at any of these points, and the question will be asked of you constantly.

The other daily rhythm is the neighbour. In most Karnataka localities, particularly outside gated apartments, people know their neighbours and greet them daily. Ignoring someone you pass every day is noticed within about a week. A ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ costs nothing and prevents a slow, quiet coldness that is hard to undo.

Practice
  1. Use ಸರಿ and ಆಯ್ತು as your default responses for a whole day.
  2. Make five ‘let’s’ sentences with the -ಓಣ ending.
  3. React to three things today with ಹೌದಾ? or ಅಯ್ಯೋ.
  4. Practise the contracted forms: ಒಂದ್ನಿಮಿಷ, ಪರ್ವಾಗಿಲ್ಲ.
  5. Refuse an offer with ಬೇಡ and accept one with ಬೇಕು.
