Travelling Around Karnataka in Kannada

⭐ Beginner⏱ ⏱️ 12 minutes📊 Lesson 29 of 126

Bengaluru will let you get by in English. Twenty kilometres outside it, that stops being true. In Chitradurga, Hassan, Bagalkot or a Malnad village, Kannada is the working language, and a driver or bus conductor who cannot follow you will simply move on to the next passenger. These are the phrases that keep you moving, plus the two habits that make directions actually useful.

Asking Directions
ಇದು ಎಲ್ಲಿ ಇದೆ?
idu elli ide?
Where is this?
ಬಸ್ ಸ್ಟ್ಯಾಂಡ್ ಎಲ್ಲಿ?
bus stand elli?
Where is the bus stand?
ಹೇಗೆ ಹೋಗಬೇಕು?
hege hogabeku?
How do I get there?
ಎಷ್ಟು ದೂರ?
eshtu doora?
How far is it?
ನಡೆದು ಹೋಗಬಹುದಾ?
nadedu hogabahudaa?
Can I walk there?
ನೇರ ಹೋಗಿ
nera hogi
Go straight
ಎಡಕ್ಕೆ ತಿರುಗಿ
edakke tirugi
Turn left
ಬಲಕ್ಕೆ ತಿರುಗಿ
balakke tirugi
Turn right
ಹತ್ತಿರ ಇದೆ
hattira ide
It’s nearby
ದೂರ ಇದೆ
doora ide
It’s far

Two habits make directions work. First, ask two people. Karnataka politeness means many people would rather guess than say ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ, so a second opinion is genuinely useful. Second, ask for a landmark rather than a street name — ಯಾವ ಲ್ಯಾಂಡ್‌ಮಾರ್ಕ್? Streets are poorly signed but everyone knows the temple, the bakery and the circle.

Distances come in landmarks and minutes, not kilometres. ಎರಡು ಸ್ಟಾಪ್ (two stops) or ಹತ್ತು ನಿಮಿಷ (ten minutes) is the normal answer to ಎಷ್ಟು ದೂರ?.

Buses, Trains and Tickets
ಮೈಸೂರಿಗೆ ಬಸ್ ಇದೆಯಾ?
Mysoorige bus ideya?
Is there a bus to Mysuru?
ಒಂದು ಟಿಕೆಟ್ ಕೊಡಿ
ondu ticket kodi
One ticket please
ಎಷ್ಟು ಗಂಟೆಗೆ ಹೊರಡುತ್ತೆ?
eshtu gantege horadutte?
What time does it leave?
ಯಾವ ಪ್ಲಾಟ್‌ಫಾರ್ಮ್?
yaava platform?
Which platform?
ಈ ಬಸ್ ಎಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಹೋಗುತ್ತೆ?
ee bus ellige hoguttee?
Where does this bus go?
ಇಳಿಯುವಾಗ ಹೇಳಿ
iliyuvaaga heli
Tell me when to get down
ಸೀಟ್ ಖಾಲಿ ಇದೆಯಾ?
seat khaali ideya?
Is there a seat free?
ಮುಂದಿನ ಬಸ್ ಯಾವಾಗ?
mundina bus yaavaaga?
When is the next bus?

ಇಳಿಯುವಾಗ ಹೇಳಿ is the single most useful sentence for a visitor on a KSRTC or BMTC bus. Tell the conductor where you are going and ask him to tell you when to get off. He will remember, and he will shout for you. This is a genuine and reliable service.

Karnataka’s state buses run in tiers: ordinary red buses, then Rajahamsa semi-deluxe, then Airavat air-conditioned. Long-distance overnight services to Mangaluru, Hubballi and Belagavi book out during festivals, so reserve ahead around Dasara and Ugadi.

When You Are Stuck
ದಾರಿ ತಪ್ಪಿದೆ
daari tappide
I’m lost
ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡ್ತೀರಾ?
sahaaya maadteeraa?
Can you help me?
ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್ ಬರುತ್ತಾ?
inglish barutta?
Do you know English?
ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ನಿಧಾನವಾಗಿ
swalpa nidhaanavaagi
A bit slowly, please
ಮತ್ತೊಮ್ಮೆ ಹೇಳಿ
mattomme heli
Please say that again
ಬರೆದು ಕೊಡ್ತೀರಾ?
baredu kodteeraa?
Could you write it down?

ಬರೆದು ಕೊಡ್ತೀರಾ? is underrated. If you can read Kannada script even slowly, having a place name written down solves the pronunciation problem entirely — you can show it to the next driver or conductor.

Pronunciation Tips
  1. Place names matter most. Say ಮೈಸೂರು (Mysooru) and ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು (Bengalooru) the Kannada way.
  2. ಎಡ (left) and ಬಲ (right) are short and easily confused under pressure. Drill them.
  3. ದೂರ has a long oo. Short ‘dura’ is not the word.
  4. ತಿರುಗಿ has three light syllables — ti-ru-gi.
  5. ಇಳಿಯುವಾಗ uses retroflex ಳ. Curl the tongue.
Common Mistakes
  • Trusting the first set of directions. Ask two people. Guessing rather than admitting ignorance is common and well-intentioned.
  • Asking by street name. Ask by landmark — temple, circle, bakery, bus stop.
  • Saying place names in an English accent. Jayanagara, Malleshwara, Basavanagudi land instantly in Kannada pronunciation and confusingly in English.
  • Not telling the conductor your stop. ಇಳಿಯುವಾಗ ಹೇಳಿ turns him into your alarm.
  • Assuming English works outside Bengaluru. In much of Karnataka it does not, and Kannada is not optional.
Cultural Note — Travelling in Karnataka

Karnataka is unusually varied for a single state, and the language shifts as you move. Mysuru Kannada is the textbook standard. North Karnataka around Hubballi, Belagavi and Kalaburagi has a distinct vocabulary and rhythm that surprises learners who trained on Bengaluru speech. On the coast, people may speak Tulu or Konkani at home and Kannada with you.

Hospitality towards travellers is genuine and can be overwhelming. Asking for directions in a village frequently ends with being invited in for coffee. Accepting is the right move if you have time; if you do not, ತುಂಬಾ ಧನ್ಯವಾದ, ಆಮೇಲೆ ಬರ್ತೀನಿ declines gracefully.

For temple towns — Dharmasthala, Kukke Subramanya, Udupi, Sringeri — check dress codes and darshana timings before you arrive. Many require traditional dress and some ask men to remove their shirt inside. And at pilgrimage sites, ಸರತಿ ಸಾಲು (the queue) can be hours long, so the free or paid darshana distinction is worth understanding in advance.

Practice
  1. Ask for directions to a landmark near you in Kannada.
  2. Buy one bus ticket using only Kannada.
  3. Tell a conductor your stop with ಇಳಿಯುವಾಗ ಹೇಳಿ.
  4. Practise ಎಡಕ್ಕೆ and ಬಲಕ್ಕೆ until they are instant.
  5. Say five Karnataka city names in correct Kannada pronunciation.
