Colour words are easy vocabulary with one grammatical catch: in Kannada a colour usually needs a linking form before it can describe a noun. ಕೆಂಪು is ‘red’, but a red shirt is ಕೆಂಪು ಅಂಗಿ and ‘the shirt is red’ is ಅಂಗಿ ಕೆಂಪಾಗಿದೆ. This page covers the eighteen colours you actually need, that grammar, and one colour pair that carries real political weight in Karnataka.
The Core Colours
Several of these are named after the thing that has the colour. ಹಳದಿ comes from turmeric, ಗುಲಾಬಿ from the rose, ನೇರಳೆ from the jamun fruit, and ಕೇಸರಿ from saffron. If you know the object, the colour is free.
ಹಸಿರು does double duty. It means green, but it also means fresh, raw or unripe — ಹಸಿ ಮೆಣಸಿನಕಾಯಿ is a fresh green chilli, and ಹಸಿ ಮಾಂಸ is raw meat.
Metallics, Shades and Describing Words
To make a shade, put ತಿಳಿ or ಗಾಢ in front: ತಿಳಿ ನೀಲಿ is light blue, ಗಾಢ ಹಸಿರು is dark green. This is the same construction English uses, so it transfers directly.
ಬಣ್ಣಬಣ್ಣದ — the doubled word — is how Kannada says ‘colourful’. Reduplication like this is a common Dravidian device for intensity or variety, and you will meet it again in words like ಬೇರೆಬೇರೆ (various) and ಸಣ್ಣಸಣ್ಣ (tiny little).
Using Colours in a Sentence
The pattern to memorise is -ಆಗಿದೆ. Attach it to a colour and you get ‘is that colour’: ಕಪ್ಪಾಗಿದೆ, ಬಿಳಿಯಾಗಿದೆ, ಹಸಿರಾಗಿದೆ. This same ending works for most descriptive words in Kannada, not just colours, which makes it one of the highest-value patterns for a beginner.
ನನಗೆ … ಇಷ್ಟ (nanage … ishta) is the standard way to say you like something. Note that it uses the dative — literally ‘to me, liking’ — which is how Kannada handles most preferences and feelings.
Pronunciation Tips
- ಬಣ್ಣ has a doubled retroflex ಣ. Curl the tongue and hold it — this is the single hardest colour word.
- ಕಪ್ಪು needs the doubled p held. A single p sounds like a different word.
- ಬಿಳಿ uses retroflex ಳ; ಬಿಲಿ with plain ಲ is not a word.
- ನೇರಳೆ has a long e then a retroflex ಳ. Three light beats, ‘nay-ra-le’.
- ಹಳದಿ also takes retroflex ಳ. Kannada colour words lean heavily on that consonant.
Common Mistakes
- Using the bare colour where -ಆಗಿದೆ is needed. ಅಂಗಿ ಕೆಂಪು sounds incomplete; say ಅಂಗಿ ಕೆಂಪಾಗಿದೆ.
- Plain l instead of ಳ. ಬಿಳಿ and ಹಳದಿ both need the retroflex.
- Assuming ಕೇಸರಿ is only orange. It covers saffron and orange, and it carries religious and political connotations that plain ‘orange’ does not.
- Translating ‘colourful’ literally. Use the reduplicated ಬಣ್ಣಬಣ್ಣದ.
- Forgetting ಹಸಿ means raw. ಹಸಿರು is the colour; ಹಸಿ before a food word means uncooked.
Cultural Note — Red and Yellow
One colour pair belongs to Karnataka specifically. The unofficial Kannada flag is horizontal bands of ಕೆಂಪು and ಹಳದಿ — red for courage and yellow for auspiciousness in the usual telling. Designed in the 1960s by the writer and activist Ma Ramamurthy, it now flies from shops, autos and street corners across the state, and blankets everything on Rajyotsava, 1 November.
Beyond that, the usual South Indian colour associations hold. Yellow and turmeric mean auspiciousness, which is why ಅರಿಶಿನ is smeared on invitation cards and doorframes. White is worn at funerals and by widows in traditional communities, so a plain white gift saree is a genuine misstep. Black is generally avoided at weddings and pujas, though it has lost that force among younger urban Kannadigas.
Green has a strong agricultural resonance — ಹಸಿರು signals fertility and a good monsoon, and it shows up constantly in farmer-movement imagery, including the green-and-yellow shawl worn by Karnataka’s farmers’ union.
Practice
- Name the colour of five objects around you in Kannada.
- Convert each colour to the -ಆಗಿದೆ form: ಕಪ್ಪು, ಬಿಳಿ, ಹಸಿರು.
- Ask a shopkeeper ಬೇರೆ ಬಣ್ಣ ಇದೆಯಾ? and understand the answer.
- Say ನನಗೆ … ಇಷ್ಟ with three different colours.
- Write ಕೆಂಪು, ಹಳದಿ and ಬಣ್ಣ in Kannada script from memory.
