Questions in Malayalam can be built with question words like എന്ത് (enthŭ), what, and എവിടെ (eviṭe), where, or by adding a question ending such as -ഓ (-ō). Tone also matters: the voice rises gently at the end. Beginners should learn both types because real conversations use them constantly. A shop question, a family question, and a polite help question may share the same small ending.
Core Cards and Examples
Start with the cards, then read the usage notes. Each Malayalam line is chosen because you can reuse it in real speech, not only recognise it on a chart.
Two Main Question Types
Malayalam uses question words for information questions: എവിടെ? (eviṭe?), where; എത്ര? (ethra?), how much; ആർ? (ār?), who. Yes/no questions often use -ഓ (-ō): വരുമോ? (varumō?), will come? വേണോ? (vēṇō?), want? മനസ്സിലായോ? (manassilāyō?), understood?
- വില എത്ര? (vila ethra?) asks price directly.
- ചായ വേണോ? (chāya vēṇō?) asks whether someone wants tea.
- സഹായിക്കാമോ? (sahāyikkāmō?) asks politely for help.
Pronunciation Tips
Question endings should rise gently, not sharply. എവിടെ (eviṭe) has retroflex ṭ. എങ്ങനെ (eṅṅane) has nasal ങ്ങ (ṅṅa). മനസ്സിലായോ (manassilāyō) has a long final ō. സഹായിക്കാമോ (sahāyikkāmō) has doubled kk and final mō.
- Do not make every question sound angry by rising too hard.
- Practise ēthŭ and enthŭ separately.
- Keep niṅṅaḷ with nasal middle and retroflex ḷ.
Common Mistakes
- Using English word order for every question and making it confusing.
- Forgetting the -ഓ (-ō) sound in yes/no questions.
- Mixing എന്ത് (enthŭ), what, and എന്തിന് (enthinŭ), why or for what.
- Using direct questions without soft tone in polite settings.
- Asking elders with casual pronouns when നിങ്ങൾ (niṅṅaḷ) is safer.
Cultural Note
Malayalam questions can be direct, but relationship changes the tone. Family members may ask personal questions about food, marriage, work, or health in a way that feels normal locally. In public, soften questions with polite forms. In shops and buses, short questions like എത്ര? (ethra?) are common and not rude if the tone is neutral.
Mini Use Case
For learners, three rescue questions matter most: പതുക്കെ പറയാമോ? (pathukke paṟayāmō?), could you say slowly; ഇത് എന്താണ്? (ithŭ enthāṇŭ?), what is this; and വില എത്ര? (vila ethra?), what is the price. These three open many conversations. Add നന്ദി (nandi) after the answer if someone helps patiently.
Practice Exercises
- Make one question with each: എന്ത്, ആർ, എവിടെ, എപ്പോൾ, എത്ര.
- Turn വരും (varum) into വരുമോ? (varumō?).
- Ask a polite help question with സഹായിക്കാമോ? (sahāyikkāmō?).
- Practise rising tone without sounding annoyed.
- Write a five-line shop dialogue using two question words.

Language Mastery
To master any language, immersion is essential. Try to surround yourself with the language as much as possible. Listen to music, watch movies with subtitles, and try to think in the language for simple daily tasks. This will help you transition from translating in your head to speaking naturally. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes; every speaker started where you are now. Consistency is more important than speed. Even ten minutes a day is better than two hours once a week. Keep practicing, and you will be amazed at your progress in just a few months!
