Here is the honest situation: most technology vocabulary in spoken Kannada is English. Nobody says the Kannada word for ‘download’. But the official Kannada terms do exist, they appear on government websites and in Kannada-language phone interfaces, and knowing them means you can actually navigate a Kannada-language screen. This page teaches both registers and tells you which is which.
Devices, Internet and Official Terms
ದೂರವಾಣಿ literally means ‘far-voice’ and is a genuinely elegant coinage — but say it in conversation and people will smile. It belongs on official signage and in news broadcasts. In speech, a phone is a ಫೋನ್.
ಕೀಲಿಮಣೆ (‘key-board’, built from ಕೀಲಿ meaning key) is one of the few Kannada tech coinages that has some real currency, because it appears in Kannada typing tools and language settings.
ಮಿಂಚಂಚೆ deserves a moment of appreciation — ಮಿಂಚು (lightning) plus ಅಂಚೆ (post) gives you ‘lightning-mail’. It is a better word than ’email’. It is also one almost nobody uses, though it does appear on Kannada government portals.
On a Kannada-language phone interface you will meet ಸಂಪರ್ಕ (contacts), ಸಂದೇಶ (messages), ಕಡತ (files) and ಮಾಹಿತಿ (info). These four are worth memorising if you plan to switch your phone over.
How People Actually Talk About Tech
Real Bengaluru tech talk is English nouns with Kannada verb endings. The ಮಾಡು construction does all the heavy lifting.
Two Kannada verbs unlock most of this: ಮಾಡು (to do) and ಆಗು (to become/happen). Any English tech word plus one of these gives you a working sentence. ಕಳಿಸಿ (send) is the third one worth knowing.
Typing Kannada
Getting Kannada onto your keyboard takes about two minutes and changes how much of the language you can actually use.
- Android: Settings → Languages & input → add Kannada. Gboard supports both transliteration and the native ಇನ್ಸ್ಕ್ರಿಪ್ಟ್ layout.
- iPhone: Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Add New Keyboard → Kannada.
- Transliteration is easier to start. Type ‘namaskara’ and it offers ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ. Most people never move past this.
- Desktop: Google Input Tools or the built-in Kannada keyboard on Windows and macOS both work well.
- Nudi and KGP are the older Karnataka government standards you may still meet on official systems.
A practical tip: switch one app to Kannada rather than your whole phone. WhatsApp or your notes app is enough exposure to learn the interface words without locking yourself out of anything important.
Pronunciation Tips
- English loanwords keep English sounds. Do not force ಚಾರ್ಜರ್ into a Sanskritised pronunciation.
- ಅಂತರ್ಜಾಲ has the cluster ರ್ಜ. Say ‘antar-jaala’ in two clear halves.
- ತಂತ್ರಾಂಶ is genuinely hard — tan-traam-sha. Slow down on the ತ್ರ.
- ಗುಂಡಿ has a nasal plus retroflex d. It also means a pit or a hole, so context matters.
- ಮಿಂಚಂಚೆ has two nasals close together. ‘Min-chan-che’.
Common Mistakes
- Using formal coinages in conversation. Saying ಅಂತರ್ಜಾಲ to a friend sounds like a textbook. Say ‘internet’.
- Ignoring them entirely. The opposite error. You will need them the moment you open a Kannada government website or switch your phone’s language.
- Forgetting the ಆಗು verb. Problems use ಆಗು, not ಮಾಡು: ಹ್ಯಾಂಗ್ ಆಗ್ತಿದೆ, not ‘hang maadtide’.
- Assuming ಗಣಕ is obsolete. It appears in Kannada computing textbooks and official terminology, so students meet it constantly.
- Typing Kannada in Roman script by default. Transliteration keyboards are fast now; using them builds spelling knowledge that Roman typing never will.
Cultural Note — Kannada on the Internet
Kannada has a strong digital presence for a language of its size. Kannada Wikipedia has been active since 2003, there is a large Kannada-language YouTube ecosystem, and Karnataka’s government pushes Kannada interfaces in its e-governance portals — Sevasindhu, Bhoomi land records and the RTO systems all offer Kannada.
There is also an active volunteer effort around Kannada computing. Groups have worked on open fonts, spellcheckers and localisation of major software, and ಕನ್ನಡ ಗಣಕ ಪರಿಷತ್ has been standardising Kannada computing terminology since the 1990s. Many of the formal words on this page come from that effort.
For learners, the useful consequence is that Kannada input is well supported everywhere. Unlike some Indian languages, you will rarely hit a font or rendering problem, and switching an app to Kannada is a genuinely practical study method.
Practice
- Add a Kannada keyboard to your phone right now.

- Build five sentences with an English tech word plus ಮಾಡಿ.
- Switch one app to Kannada and note four interface words you recognise.
- Ask someone ವೈಫೈ ಪಾಸ್ವರ್ಡ್ ಎಷ್ಟು? in Kannada.
