Kannada Words for Rooms, Furniture and Household Things

⭐ Beginner⏱ ⏱️ 11 minutes📊 Lesson 11 of 126

If you are renting in Bengaluru, this is the vocabulary that shows up in the first conversation with a broker and the last one with a landlord. ಮನೆ (mane) is the single most-used noun in Kannada domestic life — it appears in greetings, addresses and half the idioms. This page covers rooms, furniture, fittings and the practical phrases for describing where things are and what is broken.

The House and Its Rooms
ಮನೆ
mane
House / home
ಕೋಣೆ
kone
Room
ಹಾಲ್
haal
Hall / living room
ಅಡುಗೆಮನೆ
adugemane
Kitchen
ಮಲಗುವ ಕೋಣೆ
malaguva kone
Bedroom
ಸ್ನಾನದ ಮನೆ
snaanada mane
Bathroom

ಅಡುಗೆಮನೆ literally means ‘cooking house’. Kannada builds compounds like this constantly — ಸ್ನಾನದ ಮನೆ is ‘bathing house’, ದೇವರ ಮನೆ (devara mane) is the pooja room. Once you see the pattern you can build words yourself.

In real Bengaluru speech you will hear a hybrid: ‘2 BHK mane ide’, ‘hall dodda ide’. Nobody says ಮಲಗುವ ಕೋಣೆ to a broker — they say bedroom. The pure Kannada forms matter for reading, writing and rural conversation.

Furniture and Fittings
ಕುರ್ಚಿ
kurchi
Chair
ಮೇಜು
meju
Table
ಮಂಚ
mancha
Cot / bed
ದಿಂಬು
dimbu
Pillow
ಹಾಸಿಗೆ
haasige
Mattress / bedding
ಕಪಾಟು
kapaatu
Cupboard

ಕನ್ನಡಿ means mirror, but the same word also means ‘Kannada-speaking’ in some older compounds, and ಕನ್ನಡ is the language itself. Context always separates them, but it surprises beginners.

ಚಾಪೆ — the floor mat — is still central to Karnataka homes. Meals in traditional households are eaten sitting on a chaape, and at any function extra guests are seated on mats rather than chairs.

Saying Where Things Are, Renting and Repairs
ಮೇಲೆ
mele
On / above
ಕೆಳಗೆ
kelage
Below / under
ಒಳಗೆ
olage
Inside
ಹೊರಗೆ
horage
Outside
ಪಕ್ಕದಲ್ಲಿ
pakkadalli
Beside
ಮುಂದೆ
munde
In front
ಹಿಂದೆ
hinde
Behind

Kannada puts the location word after the noun, not before. ಮೇಜಿನ ಮೇಲೆ (mejina mele) is ‘on the table’ — literally ‘table-of on’. This postposition structure is consistent across the language and is one of the easiest grammar wins available to a beginner.

ಬಾಡಿಗೆ ಎಷ್ಟು?
baadige eshtu?
How much is the rent?
ಮುಂಗಡ
mungada
Advance deposit
ಕೆಟ್ಟುಹೋಗಿದೆ
kettuhogide
It is broken / not working
ರಿಪೇರಿ ಮಾಡಿ
ripeeri maadi
Please repair it
ನೀರು ಬರತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ
neeru barattilla
There is no water
ಕರೆಂಟ್ ಇಲ್ಲ
karent illa
There is no power

ಕರೆಂಟ್ ಇಲ್ಲ is pure Bengaluru — an English word inside a Kannada sentence, and completely standard. Nobody says ವಿದ್ಯುತ್ in daily speech unless reading an official notice.

Pronunciation Tips
  1. ಮನೆ is two light syllables with a soft final e. Not ‘may-nay’.
  2. ಬಾಗಿಲು — long aa, soft g, near-silent final u.
  3. ಕೋಣೆ uses retroflex ಣ. ಕೋನೆ with a dental n is a different word.
  4. ಅಡುಗೆಮನೆ is one word, said in one flow — not three separate beats.
  5. Loanwords like ಫ್ಯಾನ್ and ಹಾಲ್ end on the consonant with a very short vowel.
Common Mistakes
  • Putting the preposition before the noun. Kannada says ಮೇಜಿನ ಮೇಲೆ, never ‘mele mejina’.
  • Using ಮನೆ for a building. ಮನೆ is a home. An apartment block is ಕಟ್ಟಡ or simply ‘building’.
  • Saying ಕೋಣೆ when you mean ಮನೆ. Room versus house. Brokers will get confused.
  • Over-formalising with Sanskrit words. ಗೃಹ is correct Kannada but sounds like a legal document. Say ಮನೆ.
  • Forgetting the -ಇನ possessive. ‘Door of the house’ is ಮನೆಯ ಬಾಗಿಲು, not two nouns stacked.
Cultural Note — Entering a Kannada Home

Footwear comes off outside the door, always. There is usually a rack or a clear spot; if you cannot see one, leave them beside the door frame. Nobody will tell you to remove them — they will simply notice if you do not.

Most homes have a ದೇವರ ಮನೆ, a small pooja space or shelf. Do not walk in front of it in shoes, do not point your feet at it, and do not touch the idols unless invited. The threshold often has a rangoli drawn each morning in rice flour — step over it, not on it.

You will be offered water immediately and food shortly after. Refusing both outright is read as coldness. Accept the water at minimum. When you leave, the host may walk you all the way to the gate and stand there until you turn the corner — that is normal, not an attempt to hurry you out.

Practice
  1. Name every room in your house in Kannada.
  2. Say where five objects are using ಮೇಲೆ, ಕೆಳಗೆ, ಒಳಗೆ, ಪಕ್ಕದಲ್ಲಿ.
  3. Build three compounds yourself using ಮನೆ as the second part.
  4. Practise the sentence ಫ್ಯಾನ್ ಕೆಟ್ಟುಹೋಗಿದೆ.
  5. Ask a Kannada speaker ಕೀಲಿ ಕೈ ಎಲ್ಲಿ ಇದೆ? and understand the reply.
