A complete lookup table for Kannada pronouns in all their forms. The pattern is consistent once you see it: the possessive stem takes a doubled consonant, and the dative adds -ಗೆ to that stem. Learn the shape from one pronoun and the rest follow predictably.
First Person
The dative ನನಗೆ does far more work in Kannada than any English equivalent. It carries feelings (ನನಗೆ ಖುಷಿಯಾಗಿದೆ), needs (ನನಗೆ ಬೇಕು), knowledge (ನನಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತು) and language ability (ನನಗೆ ಕನ್ನಡ ಬರುತ್ತೆ). If you master one form, make it this one.
ನಮ್ಮ appears everywhere in Karnataka branding — Namma Metro, Namma Bengaluru. It means ‘our’ and carries a strong sense of local belonging.
Second Person
Use the ನೀವು column by default. ನೀನು is for close friends of your own age, children and younger relatives only. ತಾವು belongs in stage speeches and formal letters, not conversation.
Third Person and Demonstratives
ಅವರು takes a plural verb even when referring to one respected person: ಅವರು ಬಂದರು. Using ಅವನು about someone senior is the most socially visible pronoun error in Kannada.
Kannada marks near and far systematically. ಇ- is near, ಅ- is far, and it runs through the whole system: ಇಲ್ಲಿ / ಅಲ್ಲಿ, ಇವನು / ಅವನು, ಇಷ್ಟು / ಅಷ್ಟು.
Question Pronouns
Question pronouns take exactly the same case endings as ordinary pronouns, which means the pattern you learn once applies everywhere. ಯಾರಿಗೆ ಕೊಡಬೇಕು? means ‘to whom should I give it?’
One structural point makes the whole table easier to hold. Kannada pronouns work by stem plus ending: the possessive stem doubles a consonant (ನನ್ನ, ನಿಮ್ಮ, ನಮ್ಮ) and the dative attaches -ಗೆ to a related stem. Learn that shape once and you can generate forms you have never been taught rather than memorising each cell of the grid.
The second thing worth internalising is that pronoun choice is continuous social commentary. A speaker who shifts from ನೀನು to ನೀವು mid-relationship is expressing distance or displeasure; one who shifts the other way without invitation is claiming an intimacy that may not be welcome. The grammar carries information that English handles with tone alone.
For a learner the practical rule stays simple: use the polite column by default, use ಅವರು for anyone you would call sir or madam, and let people invite you downward rather than assuming it.

Pronunciation Tips
- Doubled consonants in ನನ್ನ, ನಿಮ್ಮ and ನಮ್ಮ must be held.
- ಅವರು and ಅವರ differ only in the final vowel — ‘they’ versus ‘their’.
- ನನಗೆ is three light syllables with no stress.
- ನನ್ನನ್ನು contracts heavily in fast speech.
- ಯಾರು has a long aa. Short ‘yaru’ is not the word.
Common Mistakes
- Using ಅವನು about someone senior. Use ಅವರು with a plural verb.
- Using ನಾನು where the dative is needed. Feelings and needs take ನನಗೆ.
- Confusing ಅವರ and ಅವರಿಗೆ. ‘Their’ versus ‘to them’.
- Defaulting to ನೀನು. It is rude with strangers and elders, not casual.
- Using ತಾವು in conversation. It sounds theatrical outside ceremonial contexts.
Practice
- Write all four case forms of ನಾನು, ನೀವು and ಅವರು from memory.
- Build five sentences using the dative: ನನಗೆ ಬೇಕು, ನನಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತು, and three more.
- Convert five ನೀನು sentences into the ನೀವು column.
- Say ಅವರು ಬಂದರು and check you used the plural verb.
- Ask three questions using ಯಾರಿಗೆ, ಯಾರ and ಯಾರನ್ನು.
