The Festival Year in Karnataka, Month by Month

⭐ Beginner⏱ ⏱️ 12 minutes📊 Lesson 58 of 126

The festivals vocabulary page gave you the words. This one walks the year — what actually happens, when, and how it differs between Mysuru, Mangaluru and Kalaburagi. Karnataka’s calendar runs on the lunar ಪಂಚಾಂಗ, so dates shift each year, and the state’s one civic festival sits outside the religious cycle entirely.

The Year Opens — Ugadi

Ugadi falls in Chaitra, usually late March or April, and marks the Kannada new year.

ಯುಗಾದಿ
yugaadi
Kannada new year
ಬೇವು ಬೆಲ್ಲ
bevu bella

ಪಂಚಾಂಗ ಶ್ರವಣ

ಒಬ್ಬಟ್ಟು

enne snaana
Ritual oil bath
ಹೊಸ ಬಟ್ಟೆ
hosa batte

The morning begins with an oil bath, then ಬೇವು ಬೆಲ್ಲ — bitter neem flowers mixed with sweet jaggery, eaten to accept that the year will bring both. It is one of the most quietly profound rituals in the Indian calendar, and the phrase is used metaphorically all year round.

A priest or elder then reads the ಪಂಚಾಂಗ for the coming year — predictions for rainfall, harvest and each birth star. In villages this happens at the temple with the whole community present.

Sankranti is Karnataka’s cattle and harvest festival. ಎಳ್ಳು ಬೆಲ್ಲ — sesame, jaggery, groundnut and dried coconut — is exchanged between houses with the line ಎಳ್ಳು ಬೆಲ್ಲ ತಿಂದು ಒಳ್ಳೆ ಮಾತಾಡು, ‘eat this and speak sweetly’. In rural areas cattle are painted, decorated and led across a small fire.

Holi is observed much more modestly in Karnataka than in the north. In the coastal and northern districts it has more presence, but in most of the state it passes quietly compared to Ugadi or Dasara.

Dasara and Deepavali
ದಸರಾ
dasaraa
Ten-day autumn festival
ನವರಾತ್ರಿ
navaraatri
Nine nights
ಆಯುಧ ಪೂಜೆ
aayudha pooje

ದೀಪಾವಳಿ
deepaavali
Festival of lights
ಗೋ ಪೂಜೆ

Cow worship during Deepavali

Mysuru Dasara is the state festival, celebrated by the Wadiyars since the Vijayanagara era. The palace is lit with close to a hundred thousand bulbs and the Jamboo Savari procession on Vijayadashami carries the Chamundeshwari idol in a golden howdah on the lead elephant.

ಆಯುಧ ಪೂಜೆ is when tools of trade are cleaned, decorated and blessed. Autos and buses get marigold garlands, offices bless their computers, and workshops stop for the day. It is one of the most visible festivals in urban Karnataka.

On Vijayadashami in North Karnataka, people exchange ಬನ್ನಿ leaves as symbolic gold with the greeting ಬನ್ನಿ ಬಂಗಾರದಂತೆ ಇರೋಣ — ‘let us be like gold’.

Rajyotsava and Regional Festivals
ಕನ್ನಡ ರಾಜ್ಯೋತ್ಸವ
kannada raajyotsava
Karnataka formation day, 1 November
ಗಣೇಶ ಚತುರ್ಥಿ
ganesha chaturthi
Ganesha festival
ಕಂಬಳ
kambala
Coastal buffalo race
ಹಂಪಿ ಉತ್ಸವ
hampi utsava
Hampi cultural festival
ಕಾರ ಹುಣ್ಣಿಮೆ
kaara hunnime
North Karnataka cattle festival

ರಾಜ್ಯೋತ್ಸವ on 1 November marks the 1956 unification of Kannada-speaking regions into one state. Red-and-yellow flags go up everywhere, state awards are announced, and Kannada film songs play on every street. It is civic rather than religious and is the best single day to witness Kannada pride.

Regional festivals are worth seeking out. ಕಂಬಳ buffalo races run through the coastal winter, the Hampi Utsava fills the Vijayanagara ruins with music and light, and ಕಾರ ಹುಣ್ಣಿಮೆ is North Karnataka’s own cattle festival.

Pronunciation Tips
  1. ಯುಗಾದಿ has a long aa in the middle — ‘yu-gaa-di’.
  2. ರಾಜ್ಯೋತ್ಸವ contains ತ್ಸ. Say ‘raaj-yot-sa-va’.
  3. ಎಳ್ಳು has a doubled retroflex ಳ.
  4. ಆಯುಧ has an aspirated dh at the end.
  5. ವಿಜಯದಶಮಿ is five even syllables, no stress.
Common Mistakes
  • Assuming festival dates are fixed. They follow the lunar panchanga and shift each year. Only Rajyotsava is on a fixed date.
  • Calling Dasara ‘Dussehra’. In Karnataka it is ದಸರಾ and refers to all ten days, not just the last.
  • Expecting Holi to be a major event. It is observed modestly in most of Karnataka compared to the north.
  • Treating Rajyotsava as religious. It celebrates the state’s formation and the Kannada language.
  • Refusing prasada or festival sweets. Accept at least a small piece with your right hand.
Practice
  1. Learn the four major festivals and roughly which month each falls in.
  2. Practise the Ugadi greeting in Kannada script.
  3. Find out what ಬೇವು ಬೆಲ್ಲ symbolises and explain it to someone.
  4. Watch a Jamboo Savari clip and count the Kannada words you catch.
  5. Mark 1 November in your calendar and learn one Rajyotsava song.
