Technology is the clearest example of how modern Hindi actually works. Official Hindi has invented a term for everything — संगणक for computer, कुंजीपटल for keyboard — and almost nobody uses them. What people say is English nouns inside Hindi sentences. Knowing which official words exist and which are genuinely spoken saves you from sounding like a government manual.
What People Really Say
These are English words written in Devanagari and fully absorbed into Hindi grammar — they take Hindi postpositions and verbs without resistance: मोबाइल में, कंप्यूटर पर, मैसेज भेजो. This is not lazy speech, it is standard modern Hindi across every social class.
The Official Words Nobody Says
Government documents, school textbooks and Doordarshan use Sanskrit-derived coinages. You should recognise them and avoid speaking them.
- संगणक — computer. Appears in exam papers, never in conversation.
- कुंजीपटल — keyboard. Almost comically formal.
- दूरभाष — telephone. Seen on old government signboards.
- अंतरजाल — internet. Rare even in writing now.
Notice the pattern in which words survived in Hindi: बिजली, तार and आवाज़ predate the technology and were simply extended to it. Anything invented after roughly 1950 kept its English name.
Phone Sentences You Will Need
Look at the construction: English noun plus Hindi verb phrase. ख़त्म हो गई (has finished) and नहीं आ रहा (is not coming) are doing the grammatical work. Master these two verb patterns and you can complain about any device in Hindi.
India runs on UPI to a degree that surprises visitors. Vegetable carts, autorickshaws, tea stalls and roadside barbers all display QR codes, and paying by scanning is often easier than finding change. यूपीआई चलेगा? — will UPI work — is now as common a question as asking about cash. For a learner this is genuinely useful, because it removes the छुट्टा problem entirely.
Cultural Note
Hindi’s relationship with English tech vocabulary is not a sign of decline, it is how the language has always worked. Hindi absorbed Persian administrative words under the Mughals, Portuguese object names through Goa, and English institutional words under the Raj. कमरा, अलमारी, कुर्सी and बटन are all borrowings that nobody now thinks of as foreign.
There is a real debate about it. Language purists push Sanskrit coinages and argue that unchecked borrowing hollows out Hindi. Others point out that a language which absorbs freely is a language in use. As a learner, the practical position is simple: speak what people speak, and recognise the formal words when you read them.
Pronunciation Tips
Borrowed words get Indianised, and copying that is what makes you sound natural. Retroflex consonants replace English alveolars, so ‘computer’ becomes कंप्यूटर with a curled ṭ. The English ‘v’ and ‘w’ merge — वाई-फ़ाई sits between the two. आवाज़ and ख़त्म both need their nukta sounds, z and the raspy kh. And final consonants stay clean: मोबाइल ends on a clear l with no trailing vowel.
Common Mistakes
- Using संगणक or कुंजीपटल in conversation. They are correct and unusable.
- Pronouncing borrowed words with a full English accent inside a Hindi sentence. Indianise them.
- Saying फ़ोन without the nukta f sound.
- Assuming rural India lacks digital payments. UPI penetration is extremely high across small towns.
- Translating tech phrases literally from English instead of using the ख़त्म हो गई and नहीं आ रहा patterns.
