Verbs carry more weight than any other word class in Hindi, because the ending encodes tense, gender and number all at once. This is a working list of the verbs that actually appear in conversation, grouped by what they do rather than alphabetically, with transitivity marked since that determines whether you need ने in the past.
The Essential Ten
The other five are लेना (to take), कहना (to say), देखना (to see), मिलना (to meet or be available) and रखना (to keep or place), all transitive except मिलना.
These ten account for a startling proportion of spoken Hindi. करना is the most productive verb in the language because it converts nouns into verbs — काम करना, बात करना, इंतज़ार करना, and any English word plus करना. मिलना is worth noting because it means both to meet and to be available: मुझे मिल गया means I got it.
Movement and Position
Notice these are all intransitive, so none takes ने in the past — वह बैठा, not उसने बैठा. Each has a transitive counterpart formed by a vowel change: बैठना / बिठाना (to sit / to seat someone), उठना / उठाना (to rise / to lift), रुकना / रोकना (to stop / to stop something). This pairing runs right through Hindi and once you see it, dozens of verbs come in twos.
Speech, Thought and Feeling
समझना is worth care because the natural phrasing is impersonal — मुझे समझ नहीं आया rather than मैंने नहीं समझा, though both exist. Similarly चाहना is used for wanting a thing or person, while wanting to do something takes the infinitive: मैं जाना चाहता हूँ.
Feeling verbs mostly use the मुझे construction rather than मैं — लगना, आना and होना carry hunger, fear, sleep and anger, which is covered in the sentence patterns reference.
Two of these are traps. खाना is both the verb to eat and the noun food, and सोना is both to sleep and gold. Context separates them completely, and no Hindi speaker finds either ambiguous.
पढ़ना covers reading and studying, so मैं पढ़ रहा हूँ can mean either depending on context, and a student says मैं पढ़ाई कर रहा हूँ to be specific.
The Irregular Perfects
Five verbs have irregular perfect forms, and they happen to be among the most frequent in the language.
Everything else follows the regular pattern — खाया, देखा, बोला, समझा. Memorise these five outright and the perfect tense stops being a problem, since they cause the overwhelming majority of errors.
Pronunciation Tips
पढ़ना and बढ़ना contain ढ़, the aspirated flap, which is the single most mispronounced sound in common Hindi verbs. पहुँचना carries a nasal and an aspirated ch. समझना has a middle cluster where m and jh blend. And verb endings are unstressed — करता है runs together rather than being articulated as two distinct words.
Common Mistakes
- Using ने with intransitive verbs like जाना and बैठना.
- Missing the transitive-intransitive pairs, so using रुकना where रोकना is meant.
- Saying मैंने नहीं समझा where मुझे समझ नहीं आया is more natural.
- Pronouncing पढ़ना with a hard d instead of the flap.
- Learning verbs without noting whether they are transitive.

- Find the transitive partner for five intransitive verbs.
- Write the perfect form of fifteen verbs and mark the irregulars.
