Hindi Tech Vocabulary and the Words Nobody Actually Uses

⭐⭐ Intermediate⏱ ⏱️ 13 minutes📊 Lesson 115 of 126

Technology vocabulary in Hindi splits cleanly into two separate lists: the words people actually say, which are almost all English, and the official Sanskrit coinages that appear in textbooks and government documents and nowhere else at all. You need to recognise both and speak only the first, and knowing which is which prevents some genuinely awkward sentences.

What People Actually Say

These are English words written in Devanagari and fully absorbed into Hindi grammar, taking postpositions and case endings without resistance — मोबाइल में, लैपटॉप पर. Using them is standard across every social class and register, and there is no more formal alternative that anyone would recognise in speech.

The Official Words

Recognise these for reading; do not say them.

  • संगणक — computer. Appears in exam papers and government forms.
  • कुंजीपटल — keyboard.
  • अंतरजाल — internet.
  • संचिका — file.
  • दूरभाष — telephone, seen on older government signage.

The pattern that survived is instructive: words that existed before the technology were extended to it, so बिजली covers electricity and तार covers wire and cable. Anything invented after roughly 1950 kept its English name, and the Sanskrit coinages were created deliberately by committee rather than emerging from use.

Talking About Problems
नेटवर्क नहीं आ रहा
network nahin aa raha
there’s no signal
हैंग हो गया
hang ho gaya
it has frozen
चार्ज ख़त्म
charge khatam
the battery is dead
रीस्टार्ट कर दो
restart kar do
restart it
इंटरनेट स्लो है
internet slow hai
the internet is slow

The productive pattern here is [English word] + हो गया or कर दो, which turns any technical term into a Hindi sentence. हैंग हो गया, क्रैश हो गया, अपडेट कर दो, इंस्टॉल कर दो. Learn these two constructions and you can describe any technical problem without knowing a single Hindi technology noun.

यूपीआई
UPI
instant payment system
क्यूआर कोड
QR code
QR code
पेमेंट
payment
payment
ट्रांजैक्शन फेल
transaction fail
transaction failed
पैसे कट गए
paise kat gaye
money was deducted

India’s payment infrastructure is genuinely ahead of most of the world, and vegetable carts and tea stalls display QR codes routinely. यूपीआई चलेगा? is now as common a question as asking about change. The phrase to know if something goes wrong is पैसे कट गए पर पेमेंट नहीं हुआ — money was deducted but the payment did not go through, which is a common enough occurrence to have a standard resolution process.

Cultural Note

There is a genuine debate in India about English dominance in technical vocabulary. Language purists argue that unchecked borrowing hollows out Hindi, and government bodies continue to publish Sanskrit coinages. Most speakers ignore them entirely, and Hindi has absorbed foreign vocabulary throughout its history — कमरा from Portuguese, दुकान from Arabic — without anyone now regarding those as foreign.

Digital literacy in Hindi-speaking India is higher than many visitors expect. Cheap data made smartphones near-universal, and voice interfaces and video content have brought online large numbers of people who read little. This is why YouTube in Hindi is enormous and why voice notes are often preferred to typing.

For a learner the practical position is straightforward: speak what people speak, recognise the formal words when you meet them in print, and do not let a purist tell you that using मोबाइल is a failure of Hindi.

Pronunciation Tips

Borrowed words are Indianised and copying that is what sounds natural. English alveolar consonants become retroflex, so कंप्यूटर has a curled ṭ. The v and w distinction collapses. Final consonants stay clean without a trailing vowel — मोबाइल ends on a clear l. Pronouncing these words in a full native English accent inside a Hindi sentence is more jarring than a grammatical error would be.

Common Mistakes
  • Using संगणक or कुंजीपटल in conversation.
  • Pronouncing borrowed words with a native English accent.
  • Assuming rural India has low digital literacy.
  • Translating technical phrases literally instead of using the हो गया pattern.
  • Forgetting that loanwords take Hindi gender — फ़ाइल is feminine.
Practice Exercises
  1. Describe three technical problems using हो गया and कर दो.
  2. List five English tech words you use in Hindi sentences daily.
  3. Find the official Hindi term for four devices and note where you would see it.
  4. Practise asking whether UPI is accepted.
  5. Assign genders to eight technology loanwords.
