Medical vocabulary is the one category where hesitation has real consequences.
Introduction
- నొప్పి (noppi) = pain — combine it with any body part to describe almost any symptom.
- నాకు … ఉంది = “I have …”. నాకు జ్వరం ఉంది = I have a fever.
- Emergency: 108 for ambulance, 112 for all emergencies.
A doctor in a government hospital in Warangal may see sixty patients before lunch, and the patient who can name the symptom clearly gets treated accurately
Telugu medical language has two layers. Everyday symptom words are pure Telugu and beautifully simple — నొప్పి (pain), జ్వరం (fever), దగ్గు (cough). Clinical and pharmaceutical terms are largely English, used unchanged by doctors and pharmacists across both states
This lesson gives you symptoms, body parts in a medical context, the doctor’s standard questions, pharmacy phrases and the emergency lines worth memorising before you need them

Vocabulary & Usage
Doctor: చెప్పండి, ఏమి ఇబ్బంది? Cheppaṇḍi, ēmi ibbandi? Tell me, what is the problem?
You: నాకు జ్వరం, తలనొప్పి ఉంది. Nāku jvaraṁ, talanoppi undi. I have fever and a headache
Doctor: ఎప్పటి నుంచి? Eppaṭi nuñchi? Since when?
You: రెండు రోజుల నుంచి అండీ. Reṇḍu rōjula nuñchi aṇḍī. Since two days
Doctor: మాత్రలు రాస్తాను. భోజనం తర్వాత వేసుకోండి. Mātralu rāstānu. Bhōjanaṁ tarvāta vēsukōṇḍi. I will prescribe tablets. Take them after food
You: ఎన్ని రోజులు వాడాలి? Enni rōjulu vāḍāli? For how many days should I take them?
Emergency Lines Worth Memorising
💡 Tips & Common Mistakes
- Say నొప్పి correctly and half this vocabulary works: nop-pi , with the doubled ప్ప held for a full beat. It compounds directly onto body parts — తల + నొప్పి , కడుపు + నొప్పి . జ్వరం begins with a jv cluster, both consonants sounded together. ఆసుపత్రి opens with a long ā. Under stress people rush these words; slow down and the doctor gets it first time
⚠️ Pronunciation Errors
- నొప్పి → “nopi” ❌ — the doubled ప్ప changes the word.
- జ్వరం → “javaram” ❌ — no vowel between j and v.
- ఆసుపత్రి with a short a ❌ — the opening ఆ is long.
- మాత్ర → “matra” rushed ❌ — the ā is long and the tr is one cluster.
- దగ్గు → “dagu” ❌ — hold the doubled గ్గ.
💡 Native Speaker Tip
- Doctors in both states are used to patients arriving with a mix of Telugu and English, so “నాకు fever ఉంది” is perfectly normal and instantly understood. The two questions worth memorising as a patient are ఎన్ని రోజులు వాడాలి? (“how many days should I take this?”) and భోజనానికి ముందా, తర్వాతా? (“before food or after?”). Pharmacists answer these dozens of times a day and will explain clearly.
🪴 Cultural Notes
🪴 Cultural Notes
- Government hospitals in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh provide free or heavily subsidised treatment, and schemes like Aarogyasri cover major procedures for eligible families. In rural areas the ASHA worker is the first point of contact and communicates entirely in local Telugu. One cultural note: family members typically accompany a patient into the consultation and often answer on their behalf — this is normal, not intrusive, and a relative may relay your symptoms for you.
⚠️ Common Mistakes
⚠️ Common Mistakes
- Saying నొప్పి ఉంది without a location — always specify: తలనొప్పి, కడుపునొప్పి.
- Confusing మందు (medicine) with మద్యం (alcohol) — a genuinely dangerous mix-up.
- Guessing at duration — say ఎప్పటి నుంచి precisely; it changes the diagnosis.
- Not mentioning existing medication — always answer the అలర్జీ and మందులు questions.
- Using నువ్వు with a doctor ❌ — always మీరు and సార్/మేడమ్.
