Telugu Festivals & Cultural Celebrations (తెలుగు పండుగలు)

⭐ Beginner⏱ ⏱️ 12 minutes📊 Lesson 64 of 121

Telugu festivals follow the lunar calendar, which is why their dates move each year and why the same festival can feel different in Telangana and Andhra. This page covers the eight that shape the Telugu year, what actually happens on each, and the vocabulary you will hear during them.

What Happens, and When

Sankranti (January) is the biggest. Four days: Bhogi with its bonfire of old things, Sankranti itself with new clothes and sweets, Kanuma honouring cattle, and Mukkanuma for visiting. Houses get elaborate ముగ్గులు at the doorstep every morning.

Ugadi (March or April) opens the Telugu year. The signature dish is ఉగాది పచ్చడి, which combines six tastes — sweet, sour, salt, bitter, pungent, astringent — as a reminder that the year ahead will contain all of them.

Bathukamma (September or October) is unique to Telangana. Women build tiered flower stacks, sing around them for nine evenings, and float them on water on the final night.

Bonalu (July) belongs to Hyderabad and Secunderabad. Women carry decorated pots of cooked rice to the goddess, accompanied by drums and dance.

Pronunciation and Mistakes

💬 Pronunciation Tips

  • saṅkrānti has a nasal ṅ before the k — let it resonate.
  • dīpāvaḷi uses the retroflex ḷ, not a plain l.
  • batukamma doubles the m: batu-kam-ma.

⚠️ Common Mistakes

  • Assuming festival dates repeat annually. They follow the lunar calendar and shift.
  • Treating Bathukamma as pan-Telugu — it is specifically Telangana.
  • Calling every sweet “prasadam”. Prasādaṁ is food that has been offered in worship first.
  • Wishing someone for Ugadi using Diwali phrasing — each has its own greeting.

🌴 Culture Note

  • Sankranti brings the whole family back to the village; city offices effectively close for a week.
  • Ugadi pachchadi is eaten before anything else that morning, in small quantities, by everyone in the house.
  • Bathukamma songs are passed down orally between generations of women and vary by district.
  • Bonalu processions include the పోతురాజు, a dancer who leads the crowd.
Practice
  1. Name all eight festivals in Telugu without looking.
  2. Explain in two sentences what happens on Bhogi.
  3. Write a Sankranti greeting for a relative.
  4. List the six tastes in Ugadi pachchadi.
  5. Ask a Telugu friend which festival their family celebrates most and why.
