Banking is where politeness and precision matter most in a second language.
Introduction
- ఖాతా (khātā) = account — the single most useful word inside any Telugu bank.
- నా ఖాతాలో ఎంత ఉంది? (nā khātālō enta undi?) = “How much is in my account?”
- Carry ఆధార్ and a photo — every counter will ask for గుర్తింపు కార్డు (ID card).
A misheard number costs real money, and Indian bank counters move fast. This lesson gives you the exact words used at a State Bank branch in Vijayawada or a co-operative bank in Warangal
Telugu banking vocabulary blends three sources: pure Telugu (ఖాతా, డబ్బు, వడ్డీ), Sanskrit-derived formal terms on the forms themselves, and English for anything modern (ATM, UPI, KYC). Staff will switch to English if you struggle, but opening in Telugu changes the entire tone of the interaction
You will learn the counter phrases, the form vocabulary, how to describe a problem, and the polite formulas that get a queue-weary clerk on your side
Vocabulary & Usage
2. At the Counter
How much is in my account? నా ఖాతాలో ఎంత ఉంది? Nā khātālō enta undi?
3. Problems & Complaints
Money was debited but not received డబ్బు కట్ అయింది కానీ రాలేదు Dabbu kaṭ ayindi kānī rālēdu

Clerk: ఆధార్ కార్డు, ఫోటో తెచ్చారా? Ādhār kārḍu, phōṭō techchārā? Did you bring your Aadhaar card and photo?
You: అవును, ఇవిగో. దరఖాస్తు ఎక్కడ? Avunu, ivigō. Darakhāstu ekkaḍa? Yes, here they are. Where is the form?
Clerk: ఇక్కడ నింపి, ఇక్కడ సంతకం చేయండి. Ikkaḍa niṁpi, ikkaḍa santakaṁ chēyaṇḍi. Fill it here and sign here
You: ఎన్ని రోజుల్లో పాస్ బుక్ వస్తుంది? Enni rōjullō pās buk vastundi? In how many days will the passbook come?
Clerk: వారం రోజుల్లో వస్తుంది. Vāraṁ rōjullō vastundi. It will come within a week
💡 Tips & Common Mistakes
- The word you will say most is ఖాతా — khā-tā , both vowels long, and the kh is aspirated with a soft puff. వడ్డీ has a doubled retroflex డ్డ: hold it for a beat or it becomes a different word. In సంతకం the ం nasalises the first syllable. Numbers matter here more than anywhere — revise them until amounts are automatic
⚠️ Pronunciation Errors
- ఖాతా → “kaata” ❌ — the ఖ is aspirated, not a plain k.
- వడ్డీ → “vadi” ❌ — hold the doubled డ్డ and the long ī.
- నగదు → “nagadhu” ❌ — the ద is unaspirated, soft.
- దరఖాస్తు rushed ❌ — four beats: da-ra-khās-tu.
- ఫిర్యాదు → “firyad” ❌ — Telugu keeps the final -u: phir-yā-du.
💡 Native Speaker Tip
- Bank staff respond to two things: the honorific అండీ and having your documents ready before you speak. Open with నమస్కారం అండీ, state your need in one short sentence, then hand over the papers. If a clerk says అటు వెళ్ళండి (“go over there”), they are directing you to another counter, not dismissing you. And రేపు రండి (“come tomorrow”) usually means the system is down — ask ఎన్ని గంటలకు? to pin down a time.
🪴 Cultural Notes
🪴 Cultural Notes
- Rural and semi-urban branches often work through a బ్యాంకు మిత్ర (banking correspondent) who visits villages with a handheld device — Telugu is essential there. Joint accounts with family members are extremely common, and the word ఉమ్మడి ఖాతా (joint account) appears on most forms. Passbook updating remains a genuine ritual: many customers still visit monthly to have entries printed, even with app access.
⚠️ Common Mistakes
⚠️ Common Mistakes
- Confusing జమ (deposit) with తీసుకోవడం (withdraw) — a costly mix-up at the counter.
- Saying డబ్బు ఇవ్వండి ❌ — sounds like begging. Say డబ్బు తీసుకోవాలి.
- Using నువ్వు with bank staff ❌ — always మీరు in a formal setting.
- Forgetting ID — every transaction over a small amount needs గుర్తింపు కార్డు.
- Mixing అప్పు and వడ్డీ — అప్పు is the loan, వడ్డీ is the interest on it.
