Greeting phrases in Telugu are unusually forgiving for a learner, because one word, నమస్కారం, covers hello, good morning, good evening and goodbye. Say it with folded hands and you are never wrong
But fluency lives in the layer above that. Telugu greetings shift with age, closeness and status. You greet your grandmother differently from your college friend, and a shopkeeper differently from your boss. The plural-honorific మీరు and its verb endings (ఉన్నారు) show respect; the singular నువ్వు (ఉన్నావు) shows intimacy. Choosing wrongly is the single most common mistake foreigners and heritage learners make — and the easiest to fix once you see it laid out

- The greeting that matters most also has the trickiest shape: నమస్కారం is four beats — na-mas-kā-raṁ — with a long ā in the third and a nasal hum at the end. Don’t stress it like English “namaSTAY”. వెళ్ళొస్తాను needs a held double ళ్ళ, a retroflex l made with the tongue curled far back; it’s a distinctly Dravidian sound worth practising alone. In శుభోదయం, the శ is a soft palatal sh. And keep Telugu’s even syllable timing — no English-style stress peaks

- నమస్కారం → "namaskarm" ❌ — the final ం is its own soft nasal beat: namaskā-raṁ. ఎలా ఉన్నారు → "ela unaru" ❌ — hold the double న్న: un-nā-ru. వెళ్ళొస్తాను → "velostanu" ❌ — the ళ్ళ is doubled and retroflex. జాగ్రత్త → "jagratha" ❌ — the ending is a doubled dental త్త, not an aspirated th. శుభరాత్రి → "shubh raatri" (two words) ❌ — it's one flowing word: śu-bha-rā-tri. 💡 Native Speaker Tip The suffix అండీ is the secret handshake of polite Telugu. Attach it to almost anything and the sentence becomes warm and respectful: సరే అండీ (okay), అవునండీ (yes), రండి అండీ (please come), ఏమండీ (excuse me). Elders in particular respond noticeably better to it. Second tip: when greeting someone much older, Telugu speakers often skip words entirely and simply touch the elder's feet (పాదాభివందనం) — the elder replies ఆయుష్మాన్ భవ or దీర్ఘాయుష్మాన్ భవ (may you live long). Silence, here, is the greeting.

- Two habits define Telugu greeting culture. First, food is a greeting: అన్నం తిన్నారా? or భోజనం అయిందా? ("have you eaten?") is asked not out of curiosity but as an expression of care — the correct reply is simply అయింది, మీరు? Second, greetings extend to the family: asking only about the person is considered slightly cold, so people add ఇంట్లో అందరూ బాగున్నారా? Handshakes are common among urban men and in offices, while folded hands remain the default across generations, especially with women and elders.

Just say నమస్కారం. Translating "goodbye" as a farewell — use వెళ్ళొస్తాను; a blunt permanent goodbye feels ominous. Answering "how are you" with only బాగున్నాను — always return the question: మీరు?
