Telugu Vegetables Vocabulary — 45 Names with Audio

⭐ Beginner⏱ ⏱️ 12 minutes📊 Lesson 22 of 141

If food vocabulary gets you through a restaurant, vegetable vocabulary gets you through a kitchen — and a Telugu kitchen runs on a surprisingly small, very repeatable set of ingredients.

Introduction

Vegetables Name in Telugu: From Vankaya to Kakarakaya

ఉల్లిపాయ (onion), టమాటా (tomato), పచ్చిమిర్చి (green chilli), అల్లం వెల్లుల్లి (ginger-garlic): learn those four and you’ve already named the base of most curries served between Visakhapatnam and Hyderabad

Telugu also organises vegetables with a helpful suffix. -కాయ (kāya, literally “unripe thing”) marks a huge family of them: vaṅkāya, bendakāya, dosakāya, kākarakāya, beerakāya. Once you spot the pattern, the list stops feeling like memorisation and starts feeling like arithmetic. Leafy greens follow their own suffix, -కూర (kūra), as in palakūra (spinach) and gōṅgūra — the sorrel leaf that Andhra cuisine treats almost as a religion

This lesson gives you the everyday vegetables, the greens, the aromatics, buying phrases for the rythu bazaar, and the pronunciation details that separate a learner from someone who sounds like they cook. Start with the ten you’d buy this week

The -కాయ Family (Most Common Vegetables)

అన్నీ కలిపి ఎంత? Annī kalipi enta? How much for everything? 🗣️ Pronunciation Tips Vegetable words are compound words, so break them at the seam before speaking: vaṅ-kāya, beṇḍa-kāya, baṅgāḷa-dumpa. The nasal ṅ in vaṅkāya is made at the back of the throat, like the ng in “sing,” and it’s followed immediately by k. Retroflex letters appear everywhere — ṇ, ḍ, ṭ, ḷ — so keep the tongue curled. In

వెల్లుల్లి you have two doubled L’s in a row; slow it down: vel-lul-li. Long ā in kāya must never shorten to “kaya.”

⚠️ Pronunciation Errors

  • వంకాయ said "van-kaya" with an English v and short vowel — it's vaṅ-kāya, nasal then long ā. బంగాళదుంప rushed into "bangaladumpa." Five clear syllables: baṅ-gā-ḷa-dum-pa. గోంగూర flattened — both ō and ū are long vowels. కరివేపాకు shortened to "karivepak" — Telugu words end in a vowel; keep the final u. పచ్చిమిర్చి with a single c. The చ్చి is doubled: pac-ci-mir-ci. 💡 Native Speaker Tip In Telangana and Andhra, government రైతు బజార్ (Rythu Bazaar) markets sell direct from farmers at fixed rates — no bargaining needed there, unlike street vendors. When you do bargain elsewhere, the magic phrase is అన్నీ కలిపి ఎంత? ("how much for all together?"), which usually gets you a rounded-down total. Vendors also throw in free coriander and curry leaves; asking for కొత్తిమీర, కరివేపాకు వేయండి is completely normal.

🧠 Memory Trick

  • Anchor the suffix: -కాయ = gourd/pod family. Then attach a hook to each — vaṅkāya sounds like "wonky-ya," and brinjals do look wonky. Kākarakāya (bitter gourd) has a harsh "kaa-ka" sound, matching its harsh taste. Ullipāya (onion) — "you'll-i-pay-ya," and onion prices always make you pay. For greens, remember every leaf ends in -కూర: pālakūra, tōṭakūra, gōṅgūra.
  • 🏛️ Cultural Notes గోంగూర (sorrel) is more than a vegetable in Andhra — gongura pachadi is regarded as the state’s signature chutney and is often the first thing people send to relatives abroad. వంకాయ appears in gutti vankaya kura, a stuffed brinjal dish considered a benchmark of a home cook’s skill. During Bhogi and Sankranti, specific gourds and pumpkins appear in ritual cooking, and many families still avoid onion and garlic on fasting days, cooking nūne-less satvik curries instead.

⚠️ Common Mistakes

⚠️ Common Mistakes

  • Confusing దోసకాయ (cucumber) with దోశ (dosa). One letter apart, very different requests. Using కూర to mean vegetable. Kūra is the cooked dish; raw vegetables are కూరగాయలు. Calling all gourds సొరకాయ — bottle, ridge, snake and bitter gourds each have distinct names. Saying మిర్చి alone. Specify పచ్చిమిర్చి (green) or ఎండుమిర్చి (dried red). Treating దుంప as a standalone word for potato — it means tuber; potato is బంగాళదుంప. ✍️ 5 Practice Exercises Open your fridge and name every vegetable in Telugu. Group these by suffix: pālakūra, vaṅkāya, tōṭakūra, dōsakāya, gōṅgūra. Write a shopping list of eight vegetables in Telugu script with quantities. Role-play: ask a vendor for half a kilo of tomatoes and free coriander. Say five times slowly: వెల్లుల్లి, పచ్చిమిర్చి, బంగాళదుంప. 🎯 5 Quiz Questions Brinjal in Telugu? — వంకాయ What does the suffix -కూర signal? — A leafy green Which is bitter gourd? — కాకరకాయ Telugu for garlic? — వెల్లుల్లి Collective word for vegetables? — కూరగాయలు ❓ 5 FAQs Why do carrot and cabbage use English names? They arrived through colonial-era agriculture, so Telugu adopted the English words with local phonetics.
  • What exactly is gongura? Roselle or sorrel leaves — intensely sour, cooked into chutney with chilli and garlic. Uniquely Andhra.
  • Is dumpa potato? Dumpa means tuber generally. Potato is baṅgāḷadumpa; sweet potato is cilagaḍa dumpa.
  • How do I say “organic vegetables”? సేంద్రియ కూరగాయలు (sēndriya kūragāyalu).
  • Do Telugu people eat raw salads? Less commonly; dōsakāya and onion are eaten raw, but most vegetables are cooked or made into pachadi (chutney).
