Before you learn a single verb or noun, learning how Telugu speakers greet each other tells you something deeper: this is a language built around respect. Age, relationship and social distance are baked directly into the grammar, so the same greeting can be delivered three different ways depending on whether you are talking to your grandmother, your classmate, or the auto driver waiting outside

Say na-mas-kā-raṁ, four even beats, not “na-MUS-karam.” The long vowel mark matters: ā is held twice as long as a, and shortening it changes meaning. The retroflex sounds — ట ṭ,

Keep all four syllables even. వెళ్ళొస్తాను said as velostanu — the double ళ్ళ must be held; it's a long retroflex L. క్షమించండి flattened to shaminchandi. The క్ష is a blended k+ṣ, closer to "ksha." ధన్యవాదాలు with an English "d". Telugu ధ is aspirated — push a puff of air out. బాగున్నారా ending flat. It's a question — the final -rā rises. 💡 Native Speaker Tip Add -గారు (gāru) after any name or title when speaking to someone older, senior, or unfamiliar: Ravi gāru, ammagāru, sir gāru (yes, even that). Telugu speakers will forgive a mangled vowel instantly, but dropping gāru with an elder registers as genuine disrespect. When in doubt, add it — over-politeness is never a mistake here.

- Namaskāram — picture a "nama-scar" on your palm that only heals when you press your hands together. Veḷḷostānu — hear "vell-o-stay-new": "Well, oh, I'll stay new (and come back)." Jāgratta — it sounds like "jag-ratta"; imagine warning a friend carrying a heavy jug: "Careful with that jug!"
