Interview Conversation in Polite Malayalam

⭐⭐ Intermediate⏱ ⏱️ 15 minutes📊 Lesson 41 of 126

Job interviews in Kerala may happen in English, Malayalam, or a mix depending on the company. Even when the interview is mostly English, Malayalam helps with greetings, local rapport, and basic HR questions. This dialogue gives polite lines for entering, introducing yourself, explaining experience, discussing language skills, computer use, salary expectations, and asking a question at the end.

Conversation Line Cards

Read the lines in order first, then practise them out of order. Each card is a reusable sentence you can adapt with names, places, foods, or times.

How This Interview Dialogue Works

The conversation stays respectful with നമസ്കാരം (namaskāram), വരാമോ? (varāmō?), and നിങ്ങൾ (niṅṅaḷ). പരിചയം (parichayam) means experience, while താൽപ്പര്യം (thālparyam) means interest. ശമ്പള പ്രതീക്ഷ (śampaḷa prathīkṣa) is salary expectation, a useful but sensitive phrase.

  • Use സ്വയം പരിചയപ്പെടുത്തൂ (svayam parichayappeṭuttū) when asked to introduce yourself.
  • Use അറിയാം (aṟiyām) for “I know” or “I can.”
  • Use ചർച്ച ചെയ്യാം (charcha cheyyām) to keep salary flexible.
Pronunciation Tips

In conversations, rhythm matters as much as individual sounds. Malayalam questions usually rise gently at the end, while statements often fall softly. Watch for doubled consonants, retroflex sounds like ṭ, ṇ, ḷ, and the famous ഴ (zha) in words such as വഴി (vazhi) or മലയാളം (malayāḷam).

  • Practise long lines in two chunks before speaking fast.
  • Do not over-stress English loanwords inside Malayalam sentences.
  • Keep polite endings like -മോ (-mō) soft, not demanding.
Common Mistakes
  • Memorising the whole dialogue but failing to reuse smaller lines.
  • Using casual forms with elders, teachers, staff, or strangers too quickly.
  • Speaking in a flat voice; Malayalam needs gentle question and statement rhythm.
  • Forgetting to listen for the answer before asking the next question.
  • Translating English word order directly when a ready Malayalam chunk is safer.
Cultural Note

Kerala workplaces range from government offices and schools to hospitals, banks, shops, start-ups, and Gulf-linked businesses. English may dominate formal interviews, but Malayalam can create comfort, especially in local-facing roles. Respectful speech is important: avoid casual നീ (nī) forms, and answer directly without sounding overconfident or apologetic.

Mini Use Case

Prepare a four-line introduction: name, place, education or experience, and why you want the role. Practise it in Malayalam and English, because many Kerala interviews move between both languages naturally.

Practice Exercises
  1. Read the full dialogue aloud once slowly.
  2. Choose five lines and replace one word with your real detail.
  3. Record yourself and check whether questions rise gently.
  4. Role-play both speakers with a friend or by yourself.
  5. Write a new ending using three phrases from the cards.

Language Mastery

To master any language, immersion is essential. Try to surround yourself with the language as much as possible. Listen to music, watch movies with subtitles, and try to think in the language for simple daily tasks. This will help you transition from translating in your head to speaking naturally. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes; every speaker started where you are now. Consistency is more important than speed. Even ten minutes a day is better than two hours once a week. Keep practicing, and you will be amazed at your progress in just a few months!
