Emergency phrases must be simple, loud enough, and unambiguous. In Kerala, many people can help in English, but Malayalam phrases are valuable with drivers, local shops, elders, hospital staff, police stations, and crowded public places. Learn the lines for help, police, ambulance, doctor, pain, lost items, and not knowing much Malayalam. Do not worry about perfect grammar in an emergency; clarity and urgency are more important than elegance.
Emergency Phrase Cards
Practise these phrases slowly now so that they are easier to recall under stress. In a real emergency, repeat the key word: സഹായം (sahāyam), പോലീസ് (pōlīs), ആംബുലൻസ് (āmbulans), or ഡോക്ടർ (ḍōkṭar).
What to Say First
Start with സഹായം വേണം (sahāyam vēṇam), I need help, or ദയവായി സഹായിക്കൂ (dayavāyi sahāyikkū), please help. If you need a specific service, say പോലീസ് വിളിക്കൂ (pōlīs viḷikkū), call the police, or ആംബുലൻസ് വിളിക്കൂ (āmbulans viḷikkū), call an ambulance. Use gestures and phone location if speech is difficult.
- Use ആശുപത്രി എവിടെയാണ്? (āśupathri eviṭeyāṇŭ?) to ask for the hospital.
- Use രക്തം വരുന്നു (raktham varunnu) if someone is bleeding.
- Use എനിക്ക് മലയാളം കുറച്ച് മാത്രമേ അറിയൂ (enikkŭ malayāḷam kuṟachŭ mātramē aṟiyū) to explain your language limit.
Pronunciation Tips
Emergency pronunciation should be clear, not perfect. സഹായം (sahāyam) has a long ā in the middle. വിളിക്കൂ (viḷikkū) has retroflex ḷ and doubled kk. അപകടം (apakaṭam) has retroflex ṭ. വഴിതെറ്റി (vazhitheṭṭi) has zha and doubled ṭṭ.
- Say vēṇam with retroflex ṇ, but do not stop if imperfect.
- Keep āśupathri in four parts: ā-śu-pa-thri.
- In pāspōrṭṭŭ, the final ṭṭ is short and crisp.
Common Mistakes
- Trying to form a full complex sentence instead of repeating the key emergency phrase.
- Speaking too softly in a noisy street, bus stand, or hospital corridor.
- Forgetting to show location, ID, phone, or address when words fail.
- Using vague words when you need police, ambulance, doctor, or hospital.
- Waiting to explain Malayalam ability; say you know only a little if needed.
Cultural Note
In Kerala, bystanders, shopkeepers, auto drivers, police aid posts, hospitals, and local families may all become part of emergency help. During monsoon, travel accidents, flooding, slippery roads, and delays can happen quickly. Gulf travellers and tourists should keep address, hotel name, passport copy, and emergency contacts accessible. A few Malayalam phrases can reduce panic and help locals act faster.
Mini Use Case
If you lose your phone or passport, use the simplest line first: എന്റെ ഫോൺ പോയി (ente phōṇ pōyi), my phone is missing, or എന്റെ പാസ്പോർട്ട് പോയി (ente pāspōrṭṭŭ pōyi), my passport is missing. Then show your ID copy, hotel card, or map location.
Practice Exercises

- Write your address after എന്റെ വിലാസം ഇതാണ് (ente vilāsam ithāṇŭ).
- Role-play asking where the hospital is.
