Kannada naming is rarely a free choice. Many families are given a starting syllable by the child’s ನಕ್ಷತ್ರ (birth star), a first grandson is often named for his grandfather, and the whole thing is formalised at a ನಾಮಕರಣ ceremony. This page covers the names themselves, the system behind them, and how urban Karnataka is changing it.
Names for Girls and Boys
ಕಾವೇರಿ is distinctively Karnataka — named for the river that rises at Talakaveri in Kodagu. River and place names are a common source: ತುಂಗಾ, ಭದ್ರಾ and ಶರಾವತಿ all appear as girls’ names.
Note that many Kannada names are shared across South India, but the pronunciation differs. ಶ್ರುತಿ in Kannada keeps the ಶ್ರ cluster crisply, and the final -ಇ is short.
ಬಸವ and its variants — ಬಸವರಾಜ, ಬಸವಣ್ಣ — are strongly associated with Karnataka and with the Lingayat tradition following Basavanna. Similarly ಮಲ್ಲಿಕಾರ್ಜುನ and ವೀರೇಶ are far more common here than elsewhere in India.
The endings -ಅಪ್ಪ and -ಅಣ್ಣ on names are respect markers, which is why Karnataka has so many men named Shivanna, Ramanna, Krishnappa and Basavanna. They were originally forms of address that became names.
ನಾಮಕರಣ is usually held on the eleventh, twelfth or twenty-first day after birth, or at three months in some communities. The baby is placed in a decorated ತೊಟ್ಟಿಲು, the name is whispered into the ear three times, and relatives shower ಅಕ್ಷತೆ.
The ನಕ್ಷತ್ರ system assigns each birth star a set of syllables, and the priest gives the family a starting sound — ಚ, ಪ, ಮ and so on. Families then choose a name beginning with it. This is why siblings’ names often seem unrelated: they were born under different stars.
How Names Are Structured
Karnataka naming order differs from the north and confuses forms constantly.
- Village or town name first, often abbreviated to an initial. ಹೆಚ್. ಡಿ. ದೇವೇಗೌಡ begins with Haradanahalli.
- Father’s name second, also often an initial.
- Given name last. This is what people actually call you.
- Caste or community surname may follow, or may be absent entirely — many Kannadigas have no surname in the northern sense.
- On forms this creates chaos. What a form calls ‘surname’ may be the given name, and initials frequently stand for places rather than family names.
If someone introduces themselves with two initials and a name, the name at the end is what you use. Adding -ಅವರು to it — ರಮೇಶ್ ಅವರು — is the respectful form.
Pronunciation Tips
- ನಕ್ಷತ್ರ has the ಕ್ಷ cluster then ತ್ರ. ‘Nak-sha-tra’.
- ಶ್ರುತಿ opens with ಶ್ರ — one beat, not ‘sha-ru-ti’.
- ಪ್ರಜ್ವಲ್ has ಪ್ರ and ಜ್ವ. Say it slowly at first.
- ಶಿವಣ್ಣ has a doubled retroflex ಣ.
- Names ending in -ಅ keep a short final vowel. ಚೇತನ is not ‘Chetanaa’.
Common Mistakes
- Assuming the last name is a family surname. In Karnataka it is often the given name, with initials standing for a village and a father’s name.
- Ignoring the nakshatra letter. If a family has been given a starting syllable, suggesting names outside it is unhelpful.
- Calling an adult by a bare first name. Add -ಅವರು, ಅಣ್ಣ or ಅಕ್ಕ for anyone older.
- Confusing shared South Indian names with identical pronunciation. Kannada keeps clusters and vowel lengths that Tamil or Telugu may soften.
- Assuming -ಅಪ್ಪ endings mean ‘father’. In names they are respect markers, not literal.
Cultural Note — Naming Then and Now
Traditional Karnataka naming leaned heavily on deities and place: Chamundeshwari, Mallikarjuna, Manjunatha, Venkatesha, Basavaraja. These names map the state’s temple geography — Manjunatha from Dharmasthala, Mallikarjuna from Srisailam’s Karnataka following, Chamundeshwari from the Mysuru hill.
Urban naming has shifted noticeably in the last two decades. Younger parents favour shorter, pan-Indian names that travel well — Aarav, Anvi, Ishaan, Riya — and increasingly drop caste-indicating surnames deliberately. Two-syllable names that work in an English-speaking classroom are a conscious choice in diaspora families.
The grandparent-naming tradition is weakening but has not vanished. A first grandson named for his grandfather is still common in smaller towns, which is why you meet young men in Karnataka carrying distinctly old-fashioned names — and why the same three or four names recur across generations in one family.
Practice
- Learn the meanings of five Kannada names you already know.
- Find out what a ನಕ್ಷತ್ರ starting letter is and how it is assigned.
- Practise saying ನಕ್ಷತ್ರ and ಶ್ರುತಿ with their clusters intact.
- Ask a Kannada speaker how their name is structured and what the initials stand for.
- Add -ಅವರು to three names and use the respectful form.
