How Kannada Verbs Work, From Root to Full Sentence

⭐⭐ Intermediate⏱ ⏱️ 12 minutes📊 Lesson 46 of 126

A Kannada verb carries more information than an English one. A single word can tell you who did the action, when, whether it was polite, and whether it is finished — all through endings stacked onto a root. This looks intimidating and is actually mechanical. Learn the root, learn the endings, and you can build forms nobody has taught you.

Common Verb Roots

The root is the bare command form, and it is what a dictionary gives you.

ಮಾಡು
maadu
To do / make
ಹೋಗು
hogu
To go
ಬಾ
baa
To come
ತಿನ್ನು
tinnu
To eat
ಕುಡಿ
kudi
To drink
ನೋಡು
nodu
To see
ಹೇಳು
helu
To say
ಕೊಡು
kodu
To give
ತಗೊ
tago
To take
ಇರು
iru
To be / stay
ಗೊತ್ತು
gottu
To know

ಬರು does double duty and is worth flagging. It means ‘to come’, but it also expresses ability with a language or skill: ನನಗೆ ಕನ್ನಡ ಬರುತ್ತೆ is ‘Kannada comes to me’, meaning I can speak it.

Endings That Carry Person

Take ಮಾಡು and watch the ending change with who is acting.

ಮಾಡ್ತೀನಿ
maadteeni
I do / I will do
ಮಾಡ್ತೀವಿ
maadteevi
We do
ಮಾಡ್ತೀಯ
maadteeya
You do — informal
ಮಾಡ್ತೀರಿ
maadteeri
You do — polite
ಮಾಡ್ತಾನೆ
maadtaane
He does — informal
ಮಾಡ್ತಾಳೆ
maadtaale
She does — informal
ಮಾಡ್ತಾರೆ
maadtaare
They do / he does, polite
ಮಾಡುತ್ತೆ
maaduttee
It does — non-human

The pattern is consistent. -ೀನಿ is I, -ೀರಿ is polite you, -ಾರೆ is respectful third person. These same endings attach to every regular verb in the language, so learning them once unlocks all of them.

Notice there is no separate word for ‘will’. ಮಾಡ್ತೀನಿ covers both ‘I do’ and ‘I will do’; context decides. Kannada only marks the future separately when it needs to be emphatic.

The ಮಾಡು Construction

This is the single most productive pattern in modern spoken Kannada. Take any noun, especially an English one, and add ಮಾಡು.

ಕಾಲ್ ಮಾಡು
call maadu
To call
ಸ್ಟಡಿ ಮಾಡು
study maadu
To study
ಬುಕ್ ಮಾಡು
book maadu
To book
ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡು
sahaaya maadu
To help
ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡು
kelasa maadu
To work
ಸ್ನಾನ ಮಾಡು
snaana maadu
To bathe

Its partner is ಆಗು (to become or happen), which handles things that occur to you rather than actions you take. ಲೇಟ್ ಆಗುತ್ತೆ (it will be late), ಹ್ಯಾಂಗ್ ಆಗ್ತಿದೆ (it is hanging). Learners consistently reach for ಮಾಡು where ಆಗು is needed.

The rule of thumb: if you are the agent, ಮಾಡು. If it happens to you or to something else, ಆಗು.

Pronunciation Tips
  1. Spoken endings are contracted. Written ಮಾಡುತ್ತೇನೆ becomes ಮಾಡ್ತೀನಿ in speech. Learn the spoken form first.
  2. ಮಾಡ್ತಾನೆ and ಮಾಡ್ತಾಳೆ differ only in one consonant — dental n against retroflex ಳ.
  3. ತಿನ್ನು has a doubled n that must be held.
  4. Verb endings never take stress. The weight sits on the root.
  5. ಬಾ is a single long syllable. It is irregular and does not follow the -ು root pattern.
Common Mistakes
  • Using ಮಾಡು where ಆಗು is needed. Problems and changes take ಆಗು: ಲೇಟ್ ಆಗುತ್ತೆ, never ‘late maadutte’.
  • Using the bare root as a polite command. ಮಾಡು is blunt. Add the ending: ಮಾಡಿ.
  • Giving a non-human subject a personal ending. Buses and dogs take -ಉತ್ತೆ, not -ಾನೆ.
  • Learning only written forms. Nobody says ಮಾಡುತ್ತೇನೆ in conversation.
  • Forgetting ಅವರು takes the plural ending. One respected person still gets ಮಾಡ್ತಾರೆ.
Cultural Note — Verbs and Code-Mixing

The ಮಾಡು construction is why Kannada absorbs English so smoothly. Rather than borrowing English verbs and conjugating them, Kannada takes the English noun and attaches a native verb. The grammar stays entirely Kannada while the vocabulary expands infinitely.

This is not new or a sign of decline. Kannada has done the same with Sanskrit for well over a thousand years — ಸ್ನಾನ ಮಾಡು and ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡು are Sanskrit nouns with a Dravidian verb, formed by exactly the same mechanism now applied to ‘book’ and ‘download’.

For a learner this is liberating. You are never truly stuck for a verb. If you know ಮಾಡು and ಆಗು and you know the English noun, you can build a sentence that any Kannada speaker in Bengaluru will understand and consider entirely normal.

Practice
  1. Conjugate ಹೋಗು through all eight person endings.
  2. Build ten verbs using an English noun plus ಮಾಡು.
  3. Sort these into ಮಾಡು or ಆಗು: late, help, book, hang, study.
  4. Convert five bare roots into the polite -ಇ command form.
  5. Write the same sentence with ಅವನು and ಅವರು and change the verb correctly.
