Most private-sector interviews in Bengaluru run in English. Kannada interviews happen in government jobs, state PSU roles, teaching posts, retail, hospitality and any customer-facing role outside the tech corridor — and for those, the formal register matters as much as your answers. Opening the Interview
ನಾನು ಮೈಸೂರಿನವಳು uses the -ಅವಳು ending for a woman and -ಅವನು for a man — ಮೈಸೂರಿನವನು. The plural -ಅವರು is the respectful form you would use about someone else. It is a neat way to say ‘a person of that place’.
ನಿಮ್ಮ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹೇಳಿ is the universal opener. Prepare four sentences: name, place, education, experience. Rehearsing exactly that block removes most interview anxiety in a second language.
Experience and Skills
Answer the ‘why are you leaving’ question positively. ಬೆಳವಣಿಗೆಗಾಗಿ (‘for growth’) or ಹೊಸ ಅವಕಾಶಕ್ಕಾಗಿ (‘for a new opportunity’) are safe. Criticising a previous employer lands worse in a Karnataka interview than in many western ones — it reads as disloyalty rather than candour.
Salary, Availability and Closing
ನಿಮ್ಮ ಕಂಪನಿ ನಿಯಮದ ಪ್ರಕಾರ is the standard deflection when asked about salary expectations, and it is genuinely common in Indian interviews. It is safe, but naming a realistic range shows more confidence if you know the market.
Always ask one question at the end. ಕೆಲಸದ ಸಮಯ ಎಷ್ಟು? is enough. Saying you have no questions reads as disinterest.
Pronunciation Tips
- ಅನುಭವ is four light syllables with no stress. ‘A-nu-bha-va’.
- ಬೆಳವಣಿಗೆ has retroflex ಳ and ಣ. Slow down — it is a long word.
- ಶ್ರಮಜೀವಿ opens with the ಶ್ರ cluster. ‘Shra-ma-jee-vi’.
- ನಿರೀಕ್ಷೆ has the ಕ್ಷ cluster. ‘Ni-reek-she’.
- In an interview, speak more slowly than you think necessary. Composure reads better than speed.
Common Mistakes
- Slipping into casual forms. No ಕಣೋ, no contractions like ಆಗಲ್ಲ. Use ಆಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ in this register.
- Criticising a former employer. It lands as disloyalty. Frame the move around growth.
- Claiming fluency you lack. If your Kannada is limited, say ಕಲಿಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದೀನಿ. Being caught overstating is worse.
- Having no questions at the end. Ask at least one. Silence reads as indifference.
- Using ನೀನು with a younger interviewer. Always ನೀವು regardless of their age.
Cultural Note — Kannada and Employment in Karnataka
Kannada language ability is a live issue in Karnataka employment. State government jobs require Kannada proficiency, and candidates typically must pass a Kannada language test. Several state policies over the years have pushed for local hiring in industry, and the topic surfaces regularly in public debate.
For customer-facing roles — retail, banking branches, hospitality, healthcare, delivery management — Kannada is a practical requirement rather than a policy one. A shop assistant in Hubballi or a bank clerk in Davanagere who cannot speak Kannada simply cannot do the job.
Interview etiquette leans formal. Arrive early, dress conservatively, greet with ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ and folded hands, and wait to be asked to sit. Addressing the panel as ಸರ್ and ಮೇಡಂ throughout is expected, and calling someone by name would be startling.
