The Kannada Alphabet, Explained Letter by Letter

⭐ Beginner⏱ ⏱️ 15 minutes📊 Lesson 1 of 126

Kannada script looks intimidating because of its curls, but it is one of the most logical writing systems in India. Nothing is silent, nothing is guessed — every letter is pronounced exactly as written. Learn thirteen vowels, thirty-four consonants and one joining rule, and you can sound out a Bengaluru bus board on day one. Most learners read simple words within a week. This page walks through the whole set with audio, then covers the four sounds English speakers habitually get wrong.

ಸ್ವರ ಮತ್ತು ಕಗುಣಿತ — Vowels and Their Signs

Kannada vowels come in short-long pairs. The difference is pure length, and it changes meaning: ಕಾಲು (kaalu) is a leg, ಕಲು (kalu) is a stone. Hold the long vowel for roughly twice the beat of the short one — exaggerate it while practising.

a
Short a — as in ಅಮ್ಮ (amma, mother)
aa
Long aa — as in ಆನೆ (aane, elephant)
i
Short i — as in ಇಲಿ (ili, rat)
ee
Long ee — as in ಈಚಲು (eechalu, palm)
u
Short u — as in ಉಪ್ಪು (uppu, salt)
oo
Long oo — as in ಊಟ (oota, meal)
ru
Vocalic ru — only in Sanskrit loans like ಋತು (rutu, season)
e
Short e — as in ಎಲೆ (ele, leaf)
ee/ae
Long e — as in ಏಣಿ (aeni, ladder)
ai
As in ಐದು (aidu, five)
o
Short o — as in ಒಲೆ (ole, stove)
oh
Long o — as in ಓಡು (odu, run/read)
au
As in ಔತಣ (autana, feast invitation)
ಅಂ
am
Anusvara — adds a nasal hum, as in ಸಂಜೆ (sanje, evening)
ಅಃ
aha
Visarga — a soft breath, only in Sanskrit words like ದುಃಖ (duhkha)

Notice there is no short-long pair for and . Modern Kannada also dropped the rare vowels ೠ, ಌ and ೡ, so ignore them unless you plan to read old poetry.

A bare consonant in Kannada already carries the vowel a. The letter ಕ is not ‘k’, it is ka. To change the vowel you add a sign around it. This full set of eighteen forms for one consonant is called the kagunita, and Karnataka schoolchildren chant it aloud for months.

  • ಕ = ka (no sign needed)
  • ಕಾ = kaa (a vertical stroke on the right)
  • ಕಿ = ki, ಕೀ = kee (a curl above, pointing left or right)
  • ಕು = ku, ಕೂ = koo (a loop hanging below)
  • ಕೆ = ke, ಕೇ = kae, ಕೈ = kai
  • ಕೋ = ko, ಕೌ = kau
  • ಕ್ = k (the halant kills the vowel entirely)

That last one, the mark, is the key to everything. It is how consonant clusters are built, and it is why Kannada never needs a silent letter.

ವ್ಯಂಜನಗಳು — The 34 Consonants

Consonants are arranged in a grid that is essentially a map of your mouth. Each row starts at the back of the throat and moves forward to the lips. Within a row, the order is: plain, aspirated (puff of air), voiced, voiced-aspirated, nasal.

  • ಕ ಖ ಗ ಘ ಙ — ka kha ga gha nga (throat)
  • ಚ ಛ ಜ ಝ ಞ — cha chha ja jha nya (palate)
  • ಟ ಠ ಡ ಢ ಣ — ta tha da dha na (tongue curled back)
  • ತ ಥ ದ ಧ ನ — ta tha da dha na (tongue on teeth)
  • ಪ ಫ ಬ ಭ ಮ — pa pha ba bha ma (lips)
  • ಯ ರ ಲ ವ ಶ ಷ ಸ ಹ ಳ — ya ra la va sha sha sa ha la
ka
As in ಕಣ್ಣು (kannu, eye)
cha
As in ಚಂದ್ರ (chandra, moon)
ta
Retroflex — as in ಟೊಮೇಟೊ (tomato)
ta
Dental — as in ತಲೆ (tale, head)
pa
As in ಪುಸ್ತಕ (pustaka, book)
la
Retroflex la — as in ಬಾಳೆ (baale, banana)

The last row consonant has no English equivalent. Curl your tongue tip back to the roof of your mouth and say ‘l’. Kannada also once had ೞ (a zh-type sound) but it died out centuries ago — unlike Tamil and Malayalam, you will never need it.

ಒತ್ತಕ್ಷರ — The Subscript Letters

When two consonants meet with no vowel between them, Kannada writes the second one as a small tucked-in shape under the first. This is the ottakshara, and it is the single feature that makes the script look complex. It is not complex — it is one rule applied consistently.

ಕ್ + ಕ becomes ಕ್ಕ, written ಕ್ಕ. In a word: ಅ + ಕ್ + ಕ = ಅಕ್ಕ (akka, elder sister). The doubled consonant is genuinely held longer when spoken — ಹಣ (hana, money) and ಹಣ್ಣು (hannu, fruit) are different words.

ಅಕ್ಕ
akka
Elder sister — double k
ಬೆಟ್ಟ
betta
Hill — double retroflex t
ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ
swalpa
A little — two different conjuncts in one word
ಅಜ್ಜಿ
ajji
Grandmother — double j

Practise by copying the base letter first and then adding the subscript. Kannada handwriting is drawn top-to-bottom, and the ottakshara is always the last stroke.

Pronunciation Tips

Four things separate a learner’s Kannada from a native speaker’s.

  1. Dental vs retroflex. ತ (ta) is made with the tongue touching the back of your upper teeth. ಟ (ta) is made with the tongue
