You do not need to learn a new keyboard layout to type Hindi. Transliteration input lets you type namaste in Roman letters and produces नमस्ते automatically, and it is what the large majority of Indians actually use. Transliteration — the Easy Route
Type phonetically in Roman and the software converts as you go.
This is built into Google’s Gboard, Microsoft Indic, and most phone keyboards. Enable Hindi with the transliteration option rather than the Devanagari layout, and you can type immediately with no learning curve at all. The system also suggests corrections, which makes it forgiving of spelling guesses.
Getting the Tricky Characters
A few conventions cover almost everything the converter needs.
- Long vowels: double the letter. aa gives आ, ee gives ई, oo gives ऊ.
- Retroflex consonants: capitalise. T gives ट, D gives ड, N gives ण.

- It is the standard for professional typists, government work and data entry.
- It takes weeks to learn and offers no advantage for casual messaging.
- It is logically arranged, with vowels on the left and consonants on the right by articulation.
For most learners, transliteration is the right choice. Learn InScript only if you will be typing Hindi for several hours a day, in which case the initial investment pays back quickly.
Phone and Desktop Setup
On Android and iOS, add Hindi in the keyboard settings and choose the transliteration variant. On Windows and Mac, add Hindi as an input language and select the phonetic option rather than the traditional layout. On all of them a globe or language key switches between scripts mid-sentence, which matters because most Indian typing is code-mixed anyway.
Pronunciation Tips and How Indians Type
Worth knowing so you calibrate your expectations. A large proportion of everyday Hindi messaging happens in Roman script rather than Devanagari — kya kar rahe ho typed exactly like that. This is not considered incorrect, and WhatsApp groups full of native speakers run entirely in Roman Hindi.
Devanagari typing is more common in formal contexts, on social media posts intended to look considered, and among older users. For a learner, typing in Devanagari is genuinely good practice because it forces you to think about spelling and vowel length, so the harder option is the more useful one.
One practical warning about autocorrect. Transliteration engines guess aggressively and will confidently produce a real Hindi word that is not the one you meant, particularly with short and long vowel pairs. Because the output is in a script you read slowly, the error is easy to miss in a way it would not be in your own language. Read back anything important before sending it, and be especially careful with names, which the converter mangles routinely.
