Hindi Opposite Words, Paired for Faster Recall

⭐ Beginner⏱ ⏱️ 12 minutes📊 Lesson 97 of 126

Learning words in opposite pairs roughly doubles your recall rate, because each half gives you a retrieval hook for the other. Hindi also forms a large number of opposites with a single prefix, which means one rule unlocks dozens of words at once. Indian schools drill these as विलोम शब्द, and the habit is worth borrowing.

Size and Quantity
बड़ा / छोटा
bada / chhota
big / small
लंबा / छोटा
lamba / chhota
tall / short
ज़्यादा / कम
zyaada / kam
more / less
भारी / हल्का
bhaari / halka
heavy / light
मोटा / पतला
mota / patla
thick / thin

Note that छोटा serves as the opposite of both बड़ा and लंबा, covering small and short. Hindi is comfortable with one word doing two jobs where English separates them, and context resolves it without difficulty.

A caution about relying on translation for pairs. English opposites do not always map onto single Hindi words, and some pairs that feel obvious in English simply do not exist as a pair here. The Hindi for deep is गहरा, but the everyday opposite is not a single word so much as a construction — गहरा नहीं or उथला, the latter being uncommon enough that many speakers would hesitate. Where a neat pair exists, learn it; where it does not, do not force one.

Quality and State
अच्छा / बुरा
achha / bura
good / bad
नया / पुराना
naya / puraana
new / old
साफ़ / गंदा
saaf / ganda
clean / dirty
गरम / ठंडा
garam / thanda
hot / cold
आसान / मुश्किल
aasaan / mushkil
easy / difficult

Two words for old exist and are not interchangeable. पुराना is for things — a पुराना घर, an old house. For people you must use बूढ़ा, and calling a person पुराना would be a genuine error rather than merely odd.

The अ Prefix

A large family of opposites is formed by adding अ, exactly as English uses un- or in-.

संभव / असंभव
sambhav / asambhav
possible / impossible
सफल / असफल
safal / asafal
successful / unsuccessful
ज्ञात / अज्ञात
gyaat / agyaat
known / unknown
शांत / अशांत
shaant / ashaant
calm / restless

This is a Sanskrit pattern and it applies mostly to Sanskrit-derived vocabulary, which means formal and written Hindi rather than everyday speech. Before a vowel the prefix becomes अन्, giving अनुचित from उचित. Recognising the prefix lets you decode unfamiliar formal words on sight, which is genuinely useful when reading a newspaper.

Direction and Time
ऊपर / नीचे
oopar / neeche
up / down
अंदर / बाहर
andar / baahar
inside / outside
आगे / पीछे
aage / peechhe
ahead / behind
पहले / बाद में
pehle / baad mein
before / after
जल्दी / देर
jaldi / der
early / late

These pairs do heavy work in everyday speech because they combine with postpositions to give directions and describe positions. आगे and पीछे are particularly useful with drivers — थोड़ा आगे means a little further ahead.

Note also that several of these words function as both adverbs and postpositions. ऊपर alone means up or above, while मेज़ के ऊपर means on top of the table, and the same doubling applies to नीचे, अंदर, बाहर, आगे and पीछे. Learning them as a set therefore gives you a whole system of spatial description rather than just ten vocabulary items, which is a considerably better return on the effort.

Pronunciation Tips

भारी opens with an aspirated bh. हल्का has a half-l running into the k. ठंडा combines an aspirated retroflex ṭh with a nasal. साफ़ ends in a nukta f, and गंदा carries a nasal in the middle. पीछे has an aspirated chh — say it clearly, since पीछे and पीछा are different words.

Common Mistakes
  • Using पुराना for an old person. People take बूढ़ा.
  • Applying the अ prefix to native Hindi words, where it does not belong.
  • Confusing पहले, meaning before or earlier, with पहला, meaning first.
  • Learning single words when the pair costs almost no extra effort.
  • Missing the aspiration in छोटा and पीछे.
Practice Exercises
  1. Learn ten pairs and test yourself by producing the opposite on demand.
  2. Find five formal words using the अ prefix in a Hindi news article.
  3. Describe five objects around you using one adjective from each pair.
  4. Give directions using ऊपर, नीचे, आगे and पीछे.
  5. Write one sentence contrasting पुराना and बूढ़ा correctly.
