The office vocabulary lesson gave you the words. This one covers the situations where those words meet Indian workplace hierarchy — asking a senior for leave, chasing a colleague without offending them, and understanding that a cheerful yes may not mean the task will happen. The language is easy; the social reading is the skill.
Asking for Leave
घर में काम है is the universal, unquestioned reason for leave in India. It means literally there is work at home and it covers everything from a family wedding to a plumber visit. Nobody asks for detail, and offering an elaborate explanation is unnecessary.
Chasing Work Without Causing Offence
Direct pressure on a colleague damages the relationship, so Indian offices use softened forms.
Notice ज़रा and थोड़ा again. Even a genuinely urgent request gets softened to थोड़ा अर्जेंट है. Dropping the softener does not make you sound decisive in an Indian office; it makes you sound aggressive, and colleagues become less helpful rather than more.
Reading the Soft Yes
This is the single most useful workplace skill for a foreigner in India.
हो जाएगा is reassurance, not a commitment to a date. The way to convert it into something actionable is to ask कब तक? — by when — and get a specific day. This is not rude; it is how experienced Indian managers operate, and it is far more effective than expressing frustration later.
आपसे बात करनी थी uses the past tense — I wanted to speak — which is softer than the present and is the standard way to open with a senior. Asking a senior आपकी क्या राय है? before proposing your own view is a small move that consistently works well in Indian offices.
Cultural Note
Indian workplaces are more hierarchical than most Western ones. Disagreeing with a senior in front of others is avoided, and objections are raised privately or framed as questions. Titles and seniority are respected visibly, and using सर and मैडम is normal even among people of similar age.
Relationships run on informal reciprocity. Chai breaks, covering for a colleague, attending a wedding you were invited to at short notice — these build the goodwill that makes work move. A colleague who considers you a friend will prioritise your request over an identical one from a stranger.
Working hours are long and boundaries are looser. Calls and messages after hours are common, and while this is slowly changing in larger firms, a blunt refusal to engage outside office hours can be read as disengagement rather than professionalism.
Pronunciation Tips
छुट्टी opens with aspirated chh and doubles the retroflex ṭ. राय is a single light syllable with the ऐ diphthong. कोशिश has three even beats ending in sh. And लीजिएगा is the extra-polite form — four light beats with no stress, and dragging it out makes it sound sarcastic rather than courteous.
Common Mistakes
- Taking हो जाएगा as a firm commitment. Ask कब तक? for a date.
- Dropping ज़रा and थोड़ा from requests, which reads as aggressive.
- Disagreeing with a senior in a group meeting rather than privately.
- Over-explaining a leave request. घर में काम है is sufficient.
- Addressing senior colleagues without सर, मैडम or जी.
Practice Exercises
- Ask for a day’s leave with a brief reason.
- Chase a pending task three different ways, all softened.
- Convert a हो जाएगा into a specific deadline.
- Open a conversation with a senior using the past-tense softener.
- Frame a disagreement as a question.
